On September 24, the non-profit research institute Future of Life announced the creation of two fellowship programs named after Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin.

What is the Institute about?

The Future of Life Institute is a research institute and volunteer organization striving to reduce the global catastrophic and existential risks faced by humanity, especially AI-related ones.

The Institute specialises in three key fields: awarding grants for risk reduction, education, and advocacy within the United Nations, the US government, and European Union institutions. Its founders are MIT cosmologist Max Tegmark and Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, and the board of advisors includes Elon Musk.

The Buterin Fellowship

According to the Institute, COVID-19 has shown that the modern world is quite fragile, and therefore, all possible risks must be taken into account in advance. According to the announcement on the Institute website, the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Existential Security Fellowship is for students who will continue to work on the topic in their doctoral studies.

The annual funding for the PhD program will be $40,000 (~£29,200) over the span of five years. An additional $10,000 (~£7,300) fund will cover research, travel, and equipment costs. The second fellowship is for researchers of the topic in the next phase. Its size will be $80,000 (~£58,500) per year with the possibility of additional funding of up to $10,000 (~£7,300). The program is planned to last three years.

Vitalik Buterin is one of the founders of Ethereum (ETH), the largest blockchain platform and altcoin. Time magazine included Buterin in the list of the 100 most influential people of 2021. In May 2021, the 27-year-old Ethereum co-founder became a billionaire. It happened just after the cryptocurrency crossed the $3000 mark.

The cost of 1 ETH for today is $2,889.41, compared to yesterday, the currency rate has decreased by -9.09%. Many crypto experts believe that by the end of the year, Ethereum may surpass Bitcoin (BTC) in profitability, and the price of the coin may rise up to $10,000.
