The authors of the NFT project BAYC announced the launch of a new line of non-fungible tokens that can be obtained by using a special “mutagenic serum” on collectibles from the original Bored Ape Yacht Club series.
Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), launched in April this year and, thanks to its freaky-styley “bored monkey” characters, became one of the five best-selling collections of non-fungible tokens alongside CryptoPunks, Axie Infinity, and Art Blocks. A few days ago, the creators announced that a new project is on the horizon: the Mutant Ape Yacht Club (MAYC), a series of 20,000 non-fungible tokens, half of which will come from user-initiated “mutations” of digital collectibles from the original BAYC line.
It all started when the BAYC team announced the ‘airdrop’ of 10,000 NFTs with so-called “mutant serums”, meant to be distributed among the current Bored Ape owners. According to the idea of the project, MAYC will consist of 20,000 all-new mutant monkeys, half of which will be sold at an auction, while the other half will be obtained through the use of “mutant serums” on the collectibles from the original BAYC line.
Using Chainlink VRF technology, the BAYC team randomly issued mutant serums to bored ape owners. The serum comes in three tiers: M1, M2, and M3 “Mega Mutant”, each causing a specific type of mutation. The tiers make for three rarity levels, ranging from 1 (common) to 3 (most uncommon/unique), and therefore in value. According to the Bankless portal, each of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT monkeys can only mutate once.
As for the future of MAYC, BAYC’s creators are currently looking for new people to join the team, and have commented on the future of the project on their Discord:
“Mutant Apes are definitely part of the club and come with a lower tier of [BAYC] membership benefits. What that means is that some utilities will be exclusive to Bored Apes while other utilities will include both, or be tiered […] in the case of limited merch drops, some items may be accessible only to BAYC members, some items to both BAYC and MAYC.
We also wanted to take a moment to give a quick roadmap update. There’s only one more item left on Roadmap 1.0—The Treasure Hunt (note: this is BAYC only). The hunt will be launching shortly […] after that it’s all about Roadmap 2.0.
We have some ambitious plans for the utility we plan on offering across the BAYC ecosystem and will be unveiling the full Roadmap 2.0 in the coming weeks, but wanted to tease one Roadmap 2.0 item—Every single Bored Ape and Mutant Ape will receive a free, fully rendered and rigged 3D model that they can use in the metaverse. We’re working with Polygonal Mind to accomplish this, and given the sheer number of traits it’s going to take a few months, but we’re really excited.”
They also hinted at the possibility of a “Holywood future?”, implying that the booming success of the apes could potentially lead to them becoming a franchise for the world’s lead film forge.
