Gamestop (GME) teases the arrival of its NFT Marketplace
Just a few months ago, this legendary video game company was at the heart of the battle between Reddit’s /r/WallStreetBets and hedge funds. Now, GameStop has just announced the imminent drop of its very own NFT marketplace on Ethereum (ETH).
A cryptic announcement
Undoubtedly, the company wants to capitalise on this latest internet craze and take advantage of its recent PR windfall. Building on these, Gamestop has released a new site: https://nft.gamestop.com/
Although still very simple in appearance, with only one page at the moment, the site hides some bit secrets.
First of all, the phrase “Change The Game” dominates the page. Then, an animation of a cartridge entering a handheld games console pops up. The screen lights up with the following cryptic phrases:
Power to the players
Power to the creators
Power to the collectors
An Ethereum address full of information
Underneath, there is a wallet address, which turns out to reveal some more information.
If you go onto EtherScan and type it in, we find out the following:
First of all, we see the message “GAME ON ANON” left for us by the Gamestop developers who worked on this.
Secondly, a multitude of different ERC-20 tokens have been sent to the address. However, one of these in particular is very eyecatching. The developer team have minted a new token named after Gamestop’s share ticker – GME! Is this a nod to the WallStreetBets fiasco, or could it be the future native token of the platform?
Thirdly, there are two ERC-721 NFTs: one from CryptoKitties and the other from Gods Unchained.
There are also plenty of transactions from individuals looking to get a bit of PR. Remember how well this went with Vitalik Buterin recently?
The most interesting transaction, however, comes from reading the contract itself, with date inscription written in epoch, a way for computers to tell the date and time in one number: 1626261600.
Once we pass it through a converter, we get the following: “Wednesday, 14th July 2021, 11:20:00 GMT” (so 12:20 local time).
This date that may be a clue to the opening day of the marketplace, or the sale of the first GameStop NFTs.
Only one NFT has been created so far on this address:
GameStop is recruiting!
Have you always dreamed of working at GameStop? Then the announcement at the bottom of this cryptic page is right up ypour street!

A sneaky easter egg
A little playable surprise is hidden on the website. Did you find it?
So here’s how to find it:
Once on the site, you have to click at the top right on the (very) small white round circle. A browser game will then launch. It is a little nod to the game with the dinosaur available on Chrome when the internet isn’t working.
Or, if you want to play the game directly, just click on this link: https://nft.gamestop.com/runner.html
GameStop is making waves with this big announcement. Yet, don’t forget that it is diving into an ocean already breaming with fish. There are the established OpenSea and SupeRare, as well as recent announcements from eBay, Binance and HoDooi. Only time will tell whether GameStop can actually position itself in the big leagues, or if the game will stop without saving…
