Hackers leak 3M+ CoinMarketCap emails

CoinMarketCap (CMC), the premier price-tracking website for cryptocurrencies, has recently been hacked. More than 3 million emails linked to the platform were being traded on hacking forums, according to Have I Been Pwned, a website for tracking hacks and compromised online accounts.

The company published a report confirming that 3,117,548 email addresses of CMC users were leaked during a massive breach on 12th October. However, according to the same report, there are no passwords among the leaked data. 

“CoinMarketCap has become aware that batches of data have shown up online purporting to be a list of user accounts. While the data lists we have seen are only email addresses (no passwords), we have found a correlation with our subscriber base,” a CMC official commented on the matter. “We have not found any evidence of a data leak from our own servers — we are actively investigating this issue and will update our subscribers as soon as we have any new information.”

Even though no funds have been stolen, the hack clears the way for other targeted attacks on CMC’s customers.

The root of the attack is likely to remain unknown. CMC continues to assure users that the data was obtained from another platform where its users may have used the same passwords on several other websites.

Data trading on hacker forums has been an issue for years and years now. But data trading is especially dangerous when it comes down to the crypto world. For example, In March, a hack against Indian payment and wallet service provider MobiKwik resulted in 8.2TB of Know-Your-Customer (KYC) data compromised.

More than 3.1 million CoinMarketCap users’ email addresses were leaked and traded online. CMC’s representatives are sure that the risk of another cyber attack is extremely low.
