Aiden Pleterski will appear without a lawyer before a Toronto jury. Nicknamed the “Crypto King” of Canada, the 27-year-old is to be tried starting October 5 in a fraud and money laundering case involving tens of millions of dollars entrusted by investors. His trial is expected to last four weeks.

A defendant stands alone before a Canadian court, with an empty lawyer’s chair and crypto-related evidence on the table.

In brief

  • Aiden Pleterski will represent himself before the Canadian justice system.
  • Investors reportedly entrusted him with about 40 million Canadian dollars.
  • The fraud and money laundering trial is set to begin on October 5.

The “Crypto King” crypto arrives at court without a lawyer

Pleterski had requested a trial postponement to have more time to hire a lawyer. The Ontario Superior Court of Justice refused. He will therefore have to defend himself before the jury. The case arises as crypto adoption reaches record levels in Canada, with a sector now much more closely monitored by authorities.

Judge Shaun Nakatsuru nevertheless specified that he would play an enhanced role during the hearings. He will notably be able to intervene on certain objections to prevent inadmissible elements from being presented to the jury.

The trial dates had been set as early as June 2025. Pleterski recently tried to raise enough money to fund his defense. His lawyer during the postponement request explained that some family members were ready to sell assets to help him. The court did not grant more time. The trial will thus start on October 5 and is expected to last about four weeks.

Nearly 40 million dollars entrusted by investors

The case mainly dates back to 2021 and 2022. Pleterski had built an image on social media as a young successful trader, with luxury cars and a spectacular lifestyle. According to elements from the bankruptcy proceedings, investors reportedly entrusted him with about 40 million Canadian dollars. The criminal charges notably include fraud exceeding 5,000 dollars and money laundering of presumed crime proceeds.

Prosecutors accuse him of attracting clients with the promise of substantial profits from crypto and currency trading.

Cointelegraph estimates about 30 million dollars as the amount Pleterski would have obtained from his followers and investors between 2021 and 2022. Bankruptcy procedures only allowed the recovery of about 3 million dollars for roughly 160 creditors.

Canada has been strengthening its response against fraud related to digital assets for several months. In March, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada launched a coordinated operation against crypto scams. Pleterski has not yet been found guilty. It is now up to the jury to decide.

The crypto case had already taken a violent turn

The Pleterski case had long gone beyond a simple bankruptcy. In December 2022, the young Canadian was kidnapped and held for several days. Several people, some of whom were reportedly connected to investors, were later charged in this matter. Pleterski was allegedly assaulted and forced to record a video mentioning the lost money.

Two years later, Canadian authorities in turn charged him. The fraud and money laundering charges were announced in May 2024 after an investigation conducted notably by the Durham Regional Police and Ontario regulatory authorities.

The case also comes in a Canada that has become stricter with the industry. In March, 23 crypto companies lost their license in the country as part of increased financial oversight. Pleterski now faces a very unusual trial: four weeks of debates before a jury, without a defense lawyer by his side. For someone who presented himself as the “Crypto King,” the scene will be considerably less glamorous.
