The Sandbox Loses Founders Amid Company Overhaul
While Web3 seeks to reinvent itself after the bursting of the speculative bubble, The Sandbox is going through a major crisis. The French pioneer of the blockchain metaverse has just announced the layoff of more than half of its workforce and the eviction of its two co-founders. This brutal restructuring occurs in a climate of growing disinterest in 3D virtual worlds and is accompanied by a spectacular drop in the project valuation, now forced to rethink its future.
In brief
- The Sandbox lays off more than 50 % of its workforce, over 250 employees worldwide.
- The original founders, Sébastien Borget and Arthur Madrid, are removed from their operational roles.
- The main shareholder Animoca Brands directly takes over the project.
- The valuation of The Sandbox collapses, dropping from $4 billion in 2022 to $1 billion in 2024.
An unprecedented restructuring
While the foundations of Web3 shake under the threat of the quantum computer, the platform The Sandbox has entered an open crisis phase. Indeed, the company has implemented a massive restructuring resulting in two major decisions : the layoff of more than half of its worldwide workforce and the removal of the two French founders from operational roles.
The company decided to part ways with more than 250 people worldwide. At the same time, Sébastien Borget and Arthur Madrid, iconic figures of the project, have been removed from management. It is now Robby Yung, the CEO of Animoca Brands, the main shareholder, who takes direct control of operations.
Here are the main factual elements of this restructuring :
- More than 250 layoffs across the entire global workforce, representing a reduction of over 50 % ;
- The closure of several offices : in Argentina, South Korea, Turkey, Thailand, Uruguay… as well as the French Lyon office ;
- The eviction of the founders : Borget and Madrid are officially relieved of their operational roles by Animoca Brands ;
- The takeover of the project by Robby Yung, head of Animoca Brands, now in charge.
This restructuring takes place in a context of major economic downturn for the platform. The Sandbox, which had raised hundreds of millions of dollars and peaked at a valuation of $4 billion in 2022, would now be worth only $1 billion according to 2024 data.
As for the SAND token, its capitalization has dropped from $8 billion to $700 million, a 95 % decline. Actual activity on the platform is also down, with only a few hundred daily users, some suspected to be bots.
A strategic shift : focus on memecoins and community Web3
Beyond the organizational aspect, a radical strategic pivot is emerging. The Sandbox would consider progressively abandoning its immersive metaverse stance to reposition itself as a Web3 tool platform, notably with the launch of a memecoin launchpad.
This orientation would mark a decisive turning point, moving away from the dream of a virtual world in favor of social and viral dynamics. The project would now bet on the tangible uses of Web3. It would thus aim to provide creators with the means to monetize their communities, in line with trends driven by platforms like Pump.fun.
The possible appointment of a new CEO, Jason Owen, would personify this strategic transformation. His profile, closer to the music industry than gaming or blockchain, symbolizes a desire to reach a new audience, distant from metaverse purists.
If this shift towards memecoins may seem opportunistic, it fits into a context where these tokens have experienced a sudden surge in popularity since 2024, driven by their virality and low entry barriers. However, neither the official website nor The Sandbox communication channels have confirmed this mutation at this stage, which fuels some uncertainty within the community.
The stake is therefore clear : to regain users’ attention by betting on the community culture of Web3, at the risk of losing its historical DNA. Some community members might see this pivot as a betrayal, while others will view it as a necessary adaptation. In any case, this transformation reflects a paradigm shift: the metaverse no longer inspires dreams, and The Sandbox must reinvent itself or disappear.
