Analysts Question The Future Of Classic Altseason Rallies
For years, crypto investors have followed an almost immutable rule : when bitcoin takes off, altcoins eventually explode too. This phenomenon, called altseason, has long shaped market cycles. However, this pattern might belong to the past. The explosion in the number of tokens and the redistribution of capital are disrupting the market balance. Some industry leaders now talk about shorter cycles and brutal rotations. Is altseason disappearing?

In brief
- The crypto market could enter a new phase where traditional cycles, dominated by altseasons, become rarer and unpredictable.
- The explosion in the number of tokens, now over 37.8 million, dilutes liquidity and weakens altcoins’ ability to experience widespread surges.
- Altcoins’ market capitalization has significantly declined in recent months, with many projects near their all-time lows.
- This market transformation could promote shorter cycles and rapid rotations between sectors, redefining altcoins’ dynamics.
The explosion of tokens weakens altcoins’ dynamics
According to several analysts, the crypto market, despite its recovery, is undergoing a structural mutation linked to the explosion in the number of projects. More than 37.8 million tokens are now listed on CoinMarketCap, a level that strongly dilutes the liquidity available to support widespread altcoin rallies.
In this context, Andrei Grachev, co-founder of DWF Labs, believes that the historical momentum could disappear. He explains that the market is entering a phase marked by “shorter cycles and violent rotations between narratives”.
Recent data illustrate the pressure on the altcoin segment :
- The total market capitalization of altcoins has fallen by about $209 billion over thirteen months ;
- It dropped from about $1.19 trillion in October 2025 to nearly $719 billion after the market correction ;
- According to CryptoQuant analyst Darkfrost, 38% of altcoins are currently near their all-time lows.
These figures reflect a fragmented market where liquidity spreads over an ever-increasing number of projects, making it much harder to sustain widespread rallies.
The arrival of institutional capital changes the game in the crypto world
At the same time, the structure of financial flows is evolving with the massive arrival of institutional players. An increasing share of capital is now directed towards bitcoin, ether, and tokenized assets linked to real-world assets (RWA).
This reorientation is also seen on the side of regulated financial products. Bitcoin ETFs register several consecutive days of net inflows, whereas products linked to altcoins have rather experienced capital outflows.
This evolution strengthens liquidity concentration on the market’s dominant assets. Altcoins must now compete not only among themselves but also with institutional investment instruments that capture a significant share of the available capital. Analysts thus describe a market where performance will no longer be widespread but more linked to specific sector narratives.
This transformation could sustainably redefine crypto cycles. Instead of a massive altseason propelling the entire market, the future could revolve around targeted rallies on certain themes or technologies, with rapid capital rotations between sectors. For investors, understanding these new dynamics could become as crucial as anticipating bitcoin’s own cycles.
