Apple Faces Lawsuit After $1.8 Million Theft Linked to Fake Bitcoin App

Three users accuse Apple of allowing a fake Sparrow Wallet app to be published on its App Store. According to a complaint filed in California, this fraudulent app allowed the theft of more than 1.8 million dollars in bitcoin after victims entered their recovery phrases. The case raises questions about the control of apps offered on the official store and the verification mechanisms highlighted to users.

Three clients have filed a lawsuit against Apple in the federal court for the Northern District of California. They believe the company did not properly verify or monitor the apps available on the App Store, even though it promotes this platform as a reliable environment. The plaintiffs state they downloaded an app impersonating Sparrow Wallet before entering their recovery phrase there. This manipulation allowed fraudsters to transfer their bitcoins to other wallets.

The reported losses amount to about 875,000 dollars for James Ramirez, 840,000 dollars for Christopher Ellis, and 120,000 dollars for Jalen Delgado. According to the complaint document, these thefts occurred during the year 2025. The victims explain they thought they were using the genuine Bitcoin wallet. However, Sparrow Wallet has no official app on iOS. The software is only available on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Developer Craig Raw had already denounced on X the presence of fraudulent copies on Apple’s store.

The company removed fraudulent apps after the complaint

After discovering these fake wallets, Apple stated it had removed the apps impersonating Sparrow Wallet. The company also said it closed the accounts of the developers concerned. It reminds that users and developers can report apps that violate App Store rules. Then, its teams review these reports before removing non-compliant apps.

This legal case will now determine if the controls on the App Store were sufficient in this case. The discussions before the court will allow examining the responsibilities of each party. The file could also clarify platform obligations regarding fraudulent apps. Meanwhile, Apple will have to respond to the accusations made by the three plaintiffs as this proceeding continues in U.S. courts.
