Binance Dominates As Crypto Derivatives Outpace Spot Trading
In the first quarter of 2026, derivatives overwhelmingly outrank spot, revealing a heightened concentration of volumes on a few dominant platforms. Meanwhile, new players are emerging and beginning to establish themselves in a landscape previously locked down. Between persistent domination by leaders and the gradual rise of DeFi, the industry is entering a phase of restructuring.

In brief
- The crypto market is evolving rapidly with a marked dominance of derivatives over spot in the first quarter of 2026.
- Volumes reach record levels, reflecting a greater concentration around a few major platforms.
- Binance confirms its leadership position with a significant share of the derivatives and spot markets.
- A new player, Hyperliquid, makes a notable entry into the top 10 derivative platforms.
Binance dominates a derivative market in full concentration
In the first quarter, the crypto derivatives market reached unprecedented levels, confirming a marked imbalance with the spot market.
Data from CoinGlass reveals several key points :
- 18.6 trillion dollars in volume on derivatives versus 1.94 trillion on spot ;
- Sustained activity despite a less speculative context ;
- Increased concentration of liquidity on a limited number of players ;
- Structural transformation of the market.
Analysts summarize this phase accurately: “the first quarter was not marked by euphoria, but by a phase of recovery, concentration, and transformation of market structure”. This statement highlights a rebuilding dynamic rather than a mere resurgence of enthusiasm.
In this landscape, Binance asserts itself as the central player with 4.9 trillion dollars in derivatives volume, about 35 % of the activity of the top ten platforms. The exchange also maintains a dominant position in the spot market with 640 billion dollars, representing nearly 34 % of total volume. This performance occurs despite controversies related to accusations about a massive liquidation episode, which the platform attributes to macroeconomic and technical factors.
Hyperliquid and DEXs reshuffle the cards
The market evolution goes beyond the dominance of historical players. Hyperliquid marks a turning point by entering the top 10 derivative platforms for the first time with a volume of 492.7 billion dollars over the quarter. This rapid growth illustrates the rising power of decentralized exchanges specialized in perpetual contracts.
This breakthrough fits a general trend observed last year, where volumes of perpetual DEXs nearly tripled. They thus represented up to 90% of activity in certain derivative segments. Hyperliquid even established itself as the leader in its sector, capturing at times up to 70% of market share, a sign of growing interest in these decentralized alternatives.
As these new players mature, the market balance could evolve toward more competitive coexistence between centralization and decentralization. The current concentration remains marked, but the entry of players like Hyperliquid, despite a major hack, indicates a gradual reshuffling of the cards, with potential implications for the structure and governance of crypto trading.
