Bitcoin Inscriptions and the Threat to US Security

Bitcoin Ordinal inscriptions have stirred up a lot of controversy lately. They not only divide the Bitcoin community but also represent a bug for which Luke Dashjr has promised a fix by 2024.

There has been a development lately. In fact, the Bitcoin Core developer has named this flaw in Bitcoin Knots: CVE-2023-50428. CVE stands for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures.

Alongside this, the NVD classified Bitcoin inscriptions as a cybersecurity risk. On December 9, the National Vulnerability Database presented it and highlighted its impact on Casey Rodarmor’s Ordinals protocol, reports CryptoPotato.

As a reminder, the NVD is an organization under the umbrella of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a branch of the US Department of Commerce. The NVD plays a very important role in cataloging and disseminating to the public information concerning cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

The document it published concerning BTC inscriptions contains specifics about the origin of the vulnerability. Indeed, it comes from a possibility to bypass the data carrier size limit in specific versions of Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Knots. Therefore, it is possible to insert data in the form of code. The seriousness score is close to “5.3 Medium”.

This has always been the case since 2022.

As for Luke Dashjr, he has denied any form of involvement with these BTC inscriptions. Although he has received criticism from all sides for this NVD classification reason, the Bitcoin developer assured Cointelegraph that he played no part in it.
