Ethereum Exchange Balances Continue To Decline

Ethereum reserves on exchange platforms continue to shrink, while an increasing portion of the supply remains locked in staking. This dual dynamic progressively tightens the liquidity available in the market and strengthens the scenario of a supply squeeze, a supply shock likely to impact price formation. While ETH tries to maintain around $1,900, on-chain data reveals a fundamental evolution that could redefine the balance between buyers and sellers in the coming weeks.

Investors watch Ethereum coins falling from a vault.

In Brief

  • The ETH staking rate reaches a peak of 33.6%, locking an increasing portion of the money supply outside trading circuits.
  • ETH reserves on centralized platforms have dropped to 15.1 million ETH, driven by steady net withdrawals (~46,300 ETH).
  • This liquidity contraction persists during both price rises and declines, confirming a long-term liquidity withdrawal.
  • Scarcity alone is insufficient to trigger a price surge; the market still lacks sustained spot demand and institutional inflows.

The Mechanical Drying Up of Ethereum Liquidity in the Spot Market

The analysis of on-chain metrics confirms a structural and accelerated contraction of immediately available Ethereum supply for trading. Recent data published by CryptoQuant reveal several key indicators:

  • The surge in ETH 2.0 staking : the staking rate has crossed a new threshold to reach approximately 33.6%, marking a spectacular increase from the 28% recorded at the beginning of 2025 ;
  • The drop in reserves on exchanges : ETH reserves held across all centralized exchange platforms have drastically decreased, from a peak above 21 million ETH to about 15.1 million ETH ;
  • Negative net flows on platforms : recent net flows on exchanges remain negative at around -46,300 ETH, reflecting withdrawals that far exceed deposits ;
  • Continuously positive inflows toward staking : incoming flows to the staking protocol remain positive with about +62,200 ETH, although this pace is significantly below the episodic peaks observed earlier in the period.

This joint movement of withdrawal from platforms and orientation toward staking is not a simple short-term speculative fluctuation. The decline in exchange reserves has in fact persisted uninterrupted through both price increases and correction phases. According to CryptoQuant analysts, this persistence reflects a structural reduction of immediately accessible supply rather than an ephemeral withdrawal cycle. The combined effect of these flows creates a fundamentally constructive signal for Ethereum’s medium-term supply profile. More tokens are entering the staking contract while an increasingly smaller quantity remains stationed on exchange platforms, restricting the mass of ETH awaiting sale on the secondary market.

The Imperative of Real Demand

While the token scarcity is indisputable in accounting terms, price mechanics follow a more complex logic where supply restriction has no effect without buying pressure. As CryptoQuant experts point out, “a simple reduction of supply is not enough to trigger a price squeeze. To raise the price, sustained demand on the spot market, increased network activity, or inflows from institutional actors are still needed.”

Despite a price rebound toward $1,900, the market has yet to show the buying intensity necessary to convert this liquidity drop into a decisive bullish breakout. Mere token scarcity alone cannot guarantee a significant upward move without an external catalyst to stimulate spot trading volume.

The analysis of network activity and institutional flows shows buyer enthusiasm remains moderate at this stage. Even if the ongoing reserve withdrawal offers a supportive base, reduced liquidity can increase volatility without defining a clear direction. Without fresh capital injections into the spot market or renewed decentralized application usage, the scarcity of circulating money supply risks remaining a passive factor, unable alone to drive the market upward.

Critical Thresholds

Short-term evolution thus remains suspended on price confirmation of the reality of this drying up. The immediate bias remains moderately constructive as long as the drip of exchange platform reserves continues at the current pace. However, analysts warn that the theoretical realization of the supply shock will depend on strict technical breakouts on the spot market: “a sustained setting of the price above $2,000 would strengthen the hypothesis of a supply squeeze, while a return of inflows to exchange platforms would weaken it.”

Validation or refutation of the bullish scenario for Ethereum will therefore depend on the crypto price’s ability to exceed this psychological threshold or, conversely, on the detrimental return of deposit flows toward exchange platforms.

If institutional investors or a rebound in application activity fuel spot demand, the thin order book depth on exchanges could accelerate the rise of the Ether price sharply. Conversely, if demand remains apathetic or inflows toward exchange platforms resume, the supply squeeze thesis will reduce to a simple theoretical illusion.
