How an Amazon Report Led to the Blocking of Fable 5 and Mythos 5
An internal Amazon security report was enough to trigger a chain reaction all the way to Washington. Within forty-eight hours, Anthropic had to cut access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for foreign nationals, under regulatory and political pressure. How could a technical warning lead to such a radical decision?

In Brief
- On June 12, 2026, Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, alerted officials in the Trump administration about flaws detected in Fable 5, triggering the government procedure.
- Washington imposed access restrictions blocking foreign nationals, including some Anthropic employees outside the United States.
- Anthropic disputes the scope of the reported vulnerabilities and claims that comparable risks exist in other models on the market.
How Jassy’s Alert Triggered the Suspension
The suspension of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 did not come from a spontaneous government initiative. Amazon, a major investor in Anthropic, in fact identified flaws in Fable 5 affecting at least four software environments during specific requests.
The report reached up to Andy Jassy, who chose to inform U.S. administration officials directly.
What was a technical problem quickly changed nature. In response, National Cybersecurity Director Sean Cairncross and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick met to assess the risk level.
The Department of Commerce then issued the export restriction, blocking Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all non-U.S. nationals.
The message is clear: advanced AI models now fall into the category of strategic assets, subject to control rules similar to those governing other sensitive technologies.
Amazon, both partner and competitor to Anthropic
Anthropic’s response is direct. Its teams claim the identified vulnerabilities involve known scenarios in the industry, without major structural flaws, and that competing models present comparable risks without facing the same level of restriction.
However, this interruption occurs in an already sensitive context, as Anthropic is preparing for a possible initial public offering. Each day of interruption weighs on the confidence of users and investors. The removal of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 happens at a time when the company cannot afford to stumble.
The case also raises a structural question. Amazon indeed holds a unique position in this matter: investor in Anthropic since 2023, technical observer via its cloud infrastructure, and competitor in the same market with its Nova models and its IDE Kiro. This configuration is a fact. What it implies in the decision chain, however, remains open.
