The Super Bowl LVIII, although devoid of crypto ads, had its share of surprises. Jack Dorsey, wearing a Satoshi Nakamoto t-shirt from BlueSky and Block, captivated attention. Similarly, an image of Joe Biden with laser eyes, posted on Twitter just after the final, set the crypto sphere ablaze.

Super Bowl, Joe Biden, and Memes: An Unexpected Ode to Bitcoin?

An innocent tweet or a crypto nod from Joe Biden? Last August, a picture of a mug featuring his photo with red laser eyes sparked questions. Some wonder if the American president has joined the ranks of Bitcoin maximalists.

Just as we imagined.

In the corridors of the presidential sphere, a post by Joe Biden after the Super Bowl made a loud noise, but not for the reasons expected. Donning a laser eye on a photo shared on his X and Instagram profiles, the President of the United States triggered an avalanche of reactions among Bitcoin enthusiasts.

The caption “Just as we imagined” seemed enigmatic, but for many, it evoked an indirect reference to cryptocurrency, states Cointelegraph.

However, the reality was quite different: it was a meme known as “Dark Brandon”, related to a whimsical conspiracy theory about the supposed manipulation of Super Bowl 2024. This unexpected use of the meme by Biden’s communications team, aiming to make him appear more approachable and cool, caused confusion among internet users.

Reactions were swift: from speculation on crypto markets to accusations of cultural appropriation, as well as inquiries about the ETH/BTC chart. Ultimately, Biden’s foray into the world of memes once again demonstrated the complexity of interactions between politics, popular culture, and cryptocurrencies.

Biden, an Indefatigable Crypto-skeptic?

While social media buzzes with speculations about Joe Biden’s laser eyes, reality is much less cryptic. Although the president has not taken a stance for Bitcoin, a photo posted after the 58th edition of the Super Bowl fueled rumors. Yet, according to Stand with Crypto, Biden is categorized as “anti-crypto”, with five public negative statements about digital assets.

The phenomenon of laser eyes, a symbol of Bitcoin’s rise, appeared on social media in a campaign to reach $100,000 in 2021.

Meanwhile, at this crypto-less edition of the Super Bowl, Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block, took a more direct approach by donning a T-shirt honoring Satoshi, the genius behind Bitcoin, in a style reminiscent of the famous cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind album.
