United Kingdom: An Investigation Into Nigel Farage's Crypto Donations Resumes After His Election

Nigel Farage has just regained his Clacton parliamentary seat with 63% of the votes. His return to Parliament also reignites an investigation suspended since his resignation in July. The British standards commissioner is interested in several million dollars in donations and benefits received from two men linked to crypto.

Farage regains his seat and his investigation

Nigel Farage had resigned his parliamentary mandate in July before standing again before Clacton voters. The gamble worked. The leader of Reform UK won the by-election with 63% of the votes. Count Binface, a well-known satirical candidate in the United Kingdom, finished second with 27%. None of the major British parties had fielded a candidate.

Farage is therefore returning to Westminster. So is his investigation. The parliamentary standards commissioner had suspended the procedure when he left his seat. It now appears active again since his re-election. The reason concerns a possible failure to declare financial interests.

British MPs must register their current financial interests within one month following their election. Certain benefits received during the previous twelve months must also be included in this declaration. It is on this basis that Farage will have to explain himself.

Two men linked to crypto involved in the case

Christopher Harborne plays an important role in the case. This businessman linked to the crypto sector is said to have granted about 5 million pounds sterling, or 6.7 million dollars, to Nigel Farage.

Farage initially described it as a reward for his work in favor of Brexit. He later described the contributions received as gifts granted unconditionally.

George Cottrell also appears in the investigation. A former collaborator of Farage, he is said to have financed staff as well as part of his security. Cottrell also has ties to a crypto casino and has already been convicted in the United States for fraud. The commissioner will have to determine if these benefits required declaration to Parliament. 

No conclusion has yet been reached. The case comes at a time when donations linked to digital assets are already occupying Westminster. In January, several British MPs were calling for much stronger restrictions on cryptocurrency donations.

The concerns mainly involve traceability of funds and the possibility of using certain structures to introduce foreign money into British politics. Reform UK, on its side, accepts donations in crypto. Not exactly the best time for a new case.

Crypto has already accompanied Farage for a long time

Nigel Farage is not discovering bitcoin with this investigation. He had participated in the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas and has been advocating for a much more favorable policy towards digital assets for several years. Reform UK notably proposed reduced taxation on crypto capital gains and legislation intended to protect users against certain bank account closures.

The party had also opened the door to donations in bitcoin and ethereum. Farage even moved from politics to investment. In March, he had bet 1.5 million dollars on bitcoin via Stack BTC, a British company specialized in BTC treasury. Crypto thus holds a real place in his political discourse. This closeness obviously does not constitute an infraction. The investigation concerns the rules for declaring donations and benefits received by the MP, not his opinions on bitcoin.
