VanEck Flags 8 of 12 Capitulation Signals For Bitcoin
While bitcoin struggles to find a clear direction, VanEck attempts to date the end of the correction. The asset manager relies on on-chain data and market structure to measure the extent of the purge, especially among long-term holders. Its analysis mainly outlines a scenario for what follows. An accumulation phase whose duration could provide valuable clues about the next market reversal. How far do these models really allow anticipating the bitcoin awakening?

In Brief
- Bitcoin is stuck around $64,500, down 48% from its October 2025 peak ($126,300).
- Long-term holders liquidated 356,000 BTC in 30 days, lowering their supply share below 60%.
- 8 of the 12 capitulation signals tracked by VanEck are simultaneously activated as of August 18, 2026.
- Historical cycles place the end of the correction and the absolute bottom between September and November 2026.
- Although the short-term rebound remains historically slow, VanEck maintains its $180,000 target for Bitcoin.
A massive sale of 356,000 bitcoins shakes long-term holders
In their latest “Bitcoin Chaincheck” mid-August 2026 report, Matthew Sigel, head of crypto research at VanEck, and senior analyst Patrick Bush provide an unvarnished overview. While the bitcoin price was trading around 64,500 dollars at the time of writing, the crypto queen records a 48% discount from its all-time high in October 2025, set at 126,300 dollars.
The central element of this publication lies in the behavior of long-term holders. These wallets, which have held their coins for over 155 days, liquidated no less than 356,000 BTC in just 30 days. Thus, this massive selling movement caused their share of the total circulating supply to drop below the symbolic 60% threshold, although they still hold a substantial amount estimated at 11.84 million BTC.
To explain this phenomenon, VanEck analysts highlight that the market is going through what appears to be a crypto price capitulation and may be close to or currently in an accumulation phase. The report relies on a dashboard with 12 distinct capitulation indicators, combining on-chain data and market indicators that historically cluster near cycle bottoms.
As of August 18, exactly 8 of these 12 signals had simultaneously activated. Even more revealing of the purge’s extent, all 12 indicators touched the capitulation zone at some point during the past three months, proving that capitulation is not limited to a marginal sector but affects the entire ecosystem.
To gauge the scope of this liquidity shock, the main findings of the report focus on three quantified observations :
- The simultaneous activation of 8 capitulation signals out of 12 on August 18, 2026 ;
- The liquidation of 356,000 BTC by long-term holders within one month ;
- The decline in the share of historical investors below the 60% threshold of total circulating supply.
Between historical models and accumulation windows, the outlook clears for autumn
This capitulation phase fits into a very specific timeline that VanEck researchers have put into perspective with market history. The current correction has lasted about 11 months, taking the October 2025 peak as the starting point. Examining the three previous bear crypto markets, the firm calculated an average duration of 12.7 months between the peak and the absolute bottom.
If the historical dynamic were to repeat identically, the market’s major inflection point should fall within a narrow window between September and November 2026. It is during this timeframe that the capitulation phase would give way to a durable accumulation phase.
However, VanEck wishes to add an essential nuance and warns against hasty interpretations. The authors note that historical periods during which 8 to 12 of these signals flashed together did not necessarily generate an immediate rebound.
In reality, average returns recorded 90 days and 180 days after these signals were lower than bitcoin’s usual performance, demonstrating that these metrics are by no means a precise short-term timing tool. Conversely, over a 12-month horizon, buying in these capitulation zones has historically outperformed the average, even if the team reminds that the statistical sample remains limited due to the market’s young history.
The course toward $180,000 for bitcoin
Despite this methodological caution on short-term horizons, the investment company’s core position remains firm in the face of volatility. Matthew Sigel firmly maintains his long-term price target of $180,000 for bitcoin.
The firm continues to highlight the asset’s structural resilience, even in a complex macroeconomic environment where global liquidity conditions experience severe adjustments. This duality between tactical rigor in the short term and strategic confidence in the long term perfectly summarizes the stance adopted by the asset manager since the beginning of the year.
By extending the reflection on the implications of these data, these perspectives should be approached with a sharp and measured eye. On one hand, the alignment of capitulation signals and the purge endured by historical holders lay the groundwork for market cleansing, essential for building a solid foundation.
On the other hand, the weak short-term statistical performance reminds that a cycle bottom often takes the shape of a long horizontal plateau rather than a V-shaped rebound. The informed investor will therefore have to balance the patience required to traverse the critical autumn 2026 window and the discipline necessary to position for the long-term cycle theorized by institutions, materialized by the massive accumulation of whales.
