Wall Street Continues Investing In Crypto Despite Bitcoin ETF Outflows

Getting informed Bitcoin (BTC)
Summarize this article with:

Nearly 3 billion dollars have left U.S. Bitcoin ETFs in just two weeks, fueling fears of a decline in institutional interest in cryptos. However, some observers believe the market is drawing conclusions too quickly. Behind these record outflows, Wall Street would continue to strengthen its presence in the crypto ecosystem. Enough to call into question one of the main indicators used to measure investors’ appetite for bitcoin.

Two massive financial reservoirs are losing part of their contents. Behind them, a giant trading floor remains highly active. Bitcoin traders are working intensely despite the outflows.

In brief

  • U.S. Bitcoin ETFs have just undergone ten consecutive sessions of net outflows, a first since their launch.
  • Nearly 3 billion dollars have left these investment products in just two weeks.
  • This wave of outflows is partly explained by a capital rotation towards values linked to artificial intelligence.
  • However, some analysts believe these negative flows do not reflect the real state of institutional crypto adoption.

Bitcoin ETFs suffer historic pressure

U.S. listed spot Bitcoin ETFs have just recorded an unprecedented series of ten consecutive sessions of net outflows. Indeed, investors withdrew nearly 2.97 billion dollars from these products between May 15 and 29.

One session even recorded 733 million dollars in outflows, the largest daily outflow observed since January. This wave of redemptions comes as U.S. markets favor other investment themes, notably values related to artificial intelligence.

Some figures illustrate the scale of the current situation :

  • 10 consecutive sessions of net outflows, a record for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs ;
  • 2.97 billion dollars withdrawn between May 15 and 29 ;
  • 733 million dollars of outflows in a single day, the largest daily withdrawal since January ;
  • Assets under management of Bitcoin ETFs fell from 104.29 billion to 94.17 billion dollars.

This dynamic reflects a capital rotation towards other segments of the U.S. market, notably values related to AI and semiconductors, which are currently capturing an increasing share of investor interest.

Wall Street, however, continues to strengthen its presence in crypto

However, not all observers view these outflows as a major warning signal. Moreover, outflows recorded by ETFs only reflect part of institutional commitments in the crypto ecosystem. Many financial players continue their initiatives in crypto despite capital movements observed in listed funds.

Also, there is a distinction between tactical portfolio adjustments and long-term strategic directions. While some investors temporarily reduce their exposure to Bitcoin ETFs, major financial institutions continue investing in crypto-related infrastructures, services, and products. This dynamic indicates that the sector’s evolution cannot be assessed solely through the capital inflows and outflows recorded by listed funds.

The current situation thus illustrates the growing complexity of the institutional crypto market. ETF flows remain an important indicator, but their isolated interpretation can lead to hasty conclusions. While record outflows signal a phase of caution and capital reallocation, initiatives undertaken by Wall Street in the crypto universe could offer a different reading of medium-term prospects. The coming weeks will reveal whether this divergence between market sentiment and institutional commitment is merely a cyclical episode or a deeper change in the relationship between traditional finance and cryptos.
