Bitcoin takes the lead again in the crypto market, and Adam Back sees it as a clear signal. The CEO of Blockstream believes that altcoins and memecoins are gradually brought back to their “real value”: zero. A statement that revives the maximalist discourse at the moment when BTC outperforms a large part of the market. For Adam Back, this divergence mainly reflects one reality: few cryptos would be able to sustainably retain their value in the face of speculative cycles.

In a vast futuristic technology think tank, a figure inspired by Adam Back observes a gigantic floating energetic Bitcoin sphere.

In brief

  • Adam Back believes that the market is beginning to correct the valuation of altcoins and memecoins.
  • The CEO of Blockstream states that bitcoin remains the only crypto asset with credible and lasting scarcity.
  • Several arguments are put forward to explain why some altcoins are doomed to lose value in the long term.
  • The return of bitcoin dominance comes as many altcoins struggle to follow the market rebound.

“Buy bitcoin and forget the rest”: Adam Back reignites the debate

Adam Back revived the bitcoin maximalist discourse with a noteworthy post on X, as he just challenged Mark Cuban’s data. The Blockstream leader asserts that the market is finally beginning to correct the valuations of altcoins and memecoins.

“Buy bitcoin, hold it long term, and repeat. I thought the efficient market hypothesis would eventually bring altcoins to zero,” he wrote. According to him, these assets do not rely on any sustainable economic model and have neither income redistributed to holders, nor organic demand linked to blockspace, nor a defensible competitive advantage.

In his post, Adam Back puts forward several arguments to justify his market view :

  • A lack of cash flow for holders ;
  • No real demand linked to blockchain usage ;
  • A lack of durable competitive advantage ;
  • Valuations considered artificial for memecoins and some altcoins.

He has defended this market reading for nearly a decade. Thus, he even said he was surprised the process took so long. In his analysis, bitcoin remains the only crypto benefiting from credible scarcity and sufficiently robust decentralization to preserve value over the long term.

This statement comes amid persistent fragility for altcoins, while several speculative market segments show underperformance despite BTC’s recent rebound.

Bitcoin dominates while altcoins lose momentum

Adam Back’s stance comes as bitcoin regains stronger dominance in the crypto market. After falling following the postponement of the Clarity Act vote in the United States, BTC rebounded after the announcement of the end of tensions between Iran and the United States. Many altcoins failed to match this rebound with the same intensity. This divergence fuels the discourse of those favoring a refocus of capital toward bitcoin.

Adam Back also supports this view through the comparative performance of traditional markets and BTC. Replying to Mark Cuban, he noted that bitcoin had gained 25 % to 30 % since its low around 60,000 dollars, compared to 11 % for the S&P 500 and 5 % for the Dow Jones.

“You don’t get an exceptional Sharpe ratio in the long term without accepting some volatility,” he explained then to justify bitcoin’s volatility against its historical return. At the same time, the Blockstream boss financially supports several corporate BTC accumulation strategies, notably via Capital B, which aims to raise its reserves to 3,125 bitcoins through a 15.2 million euro fundraising.

This period especially marks the strong comeback of a narrative weakened after recent speculative cycles around memecoins and alternative blockchains. It remains to be seen if this renewed dominance of bitcoin signals a sustainable shift in crypto capital allocation or if it is a classic rotation phase before a potential comeback of risk appetite for altcoins.
