In today’s world, artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be taking the place of humans. Despite their utility for humans, a group of eminent international experts raise their vision differently. They draw attention to the turn AI development is taking without completely rejecting this technology. Here’s a call for humanity to take back control of an innovation that appears to be slipping away from us.

AI No Longer Serves Human Needs

According to Shannon Vallor, an expert in the field at the University of Edinburgh, the recent development of generative AI perfectly illustrates the lamented drifts. Indeed, this technological breakthrough seems to be motivated by the mere mercantile interests of companies. This, according to her, was supposed to be focused on the real human needs.

Thus, instead of AI designed to facilitate our lives, we inherit tools to which we now must adapt. “Instead of adapting technology to our needs, we adapt to the needs of technology,” Vallor laments. This unprecedented situation fuels fears of a loss of control by humans over their own creation.

Multiform Drifts

Beyond this conception of AI disconnected from human expectations, the group of experts points out various alarming drifts. On the one hand, the lack of diversity in AI design leads to systemic biases that disadvantage marginalized communities. Moreover, repeated breaches of privacy by massive data collection challenge our right to individuality.

Furthermore, this technology could alter fundamental human faculties such as rationality and memory. Finally, its use on social media risks trapping users in filter bubbles and pushing them toward radicalization.

Concrete Solutions

In response to this grim observation, the authors of “Human-Centered AI” propose practical solution pathways. They emphasize the need to finally incorporate diversity and interdisciplinary collaborations at the heart of the AI research process. Additionally, they call for greater transparency in data use.

Moreover, they encourage policymakers to apply an existing legal framework, rather than creating new regulations. As pointed out by Benjamin Prud’homme, the example of the forthcoming European AI Act could set a precedent for the rest of the world.

In summary, experts urge us to think about the future of humanity. It is time to take control of this technology and not be enslaved by it. Developing AIs based on real human needs is the best course of action. This ensures they fulfill their principal purpose, which is to assist humans.
