Binance collaborates with the FBI to recover part of the stolen funds
A hack estimated at 6.3 billion dollars puts Binance facing a major recovery operation. The platform is now looking to recover part of the stolen assets, with the support of law enforcement and industry partners. In this case, the announced freeze of 3 billion dollars constitutes a first challenge. The company also claims to have mobilized its resources to cover the losses related to this security breach. The case now also involves American authorities.

In brief
- Binance collaborates with the FBI and law enforcement to recover funds from a 6.3 billion-dollar hack.
- The platform’s partners have already frozen 3 billion dollars of stolen assets.
- Binance has provisioned over 6.34 billion dollars to cover losses, including 5 billion in tokens identical to those stolen.
- The platform holds 134 billion dollars in reserves but recorded 6 billion dollars outflows in 24 hours.
Binance cooperates with the FBI to recover the frozen funds
In a message published Friday on X, Binance confirmed its cooperation with law enforcement to recover part of the stolen funds. The platform did not name the agencies involved. A source close to the case indicated that the FBI was participating in the investigations. The agency had not responded to Cointelegraph’s questions.
Its partners have already frozen 3 billion dollars from the hack. Binance is working with authorities to recover these assets. This blockade constitutes a first step but does not guarantee their return. The process must still allow their transfer.
To cover losses, Binance says it has provisioned more than 6.34 billion dollars. This amount exceeds the announced hack amount. It includes 5 billion dollars held in tokens identical to those stolen. These reserves are meant to offset the deficit.
Significant reserves despite fund outflows
The operation takes place while Binance holds 134 billion dollars in assets. The platform occupies first place for reserves. However, it experienced 6 billion dollars of outflows in 24 hours. DefiLlama reports this movement.
Cooperation with the FBI recalls a previous seizure related to the sector. In February 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the recovery of 94,000 bitcoins. These assets were then worth 3.6 billion dollars. For Binance, they were linked to the Bitfinex hack in 2016.
At the time, law enforcement, including the FBI, had contributed to this seizure. This precedent illustrates the role of authorities in investigations into cryptocurrency thefts. For the company, the goal is now to recover the frozen funds. No schedule has been communicated.
The continuation of the case will therefore depend on the steps taken to recover the 3 billion dollars frozen. Binance will also have to monitor its reserve movements and the evolution of fund outflows. At this stage, no recovery schedule has been announced.
