Binance Hack: How OKX Protects Your Account Up to €500,000
On October 29, hackers attributed by the FBI to North Korea emptied Binance’s hot wallets in about twenty minutes: $6.3 billion, the largest crypto theft ever recorded. Binance assures that its customers will lose nothing and says it has already covered 95% of the gap with its own funds. But the entry point, the infected laptop of an engineer, is the same as that of attacks targeting individual accounts every day. This is the risk that OKX covers with OKX Shield, free of charge.

In Brief
- Binance lost about $6.3 billion on October 29, including $3.8 billion in ether, after compromising an engineer’s workstation; the FBI blames the North Korean group TraderTraitor.
- Binance users do not bear the loss: the exchange says it replaced 95% of the stolen assets by November 2 and reopened withdrawals on November 1.
- OKX was not affected, according to its founder Star Xu, who acknowledges that no platform can guarantee absolute security.
- OKX Shield can reimburse losses related to a takeover of your account by a third party: up to €100,000 standard, €250,000 for VIP 1 to 3, €500,000 for VIP 4 to 6.
What happened at Binance on October 29?
A lightning theft on the platform’s hot wallets, not on customers’ accounts. The attack started at 8:05 pm UTC on the XRP Ledger, then spread to Ethereum, Bitcoin, and seven other networks. About $3.8 billion in ether, 18,270 bitcoins ($1.5 billion) and 628 million in TRON were taken in about twenty minutes.
According to Binance’s preliminary investigation, it all started from a DevOps engineer’s laptop. The attackers found access to an internal service that processes withdrawals and sent unauthorized orders. Binance says it found no trace of private key leaks. The FBI designated on October 31 the group TraderTraitor, previously accused of the $1.5 billion theft from Bybit in 2025.
The response was swift. Tether froze about $1.57 billion linked to the theft and Circle $800 million, according to Reuters. Binance suspended withdrawals, then covered the loss with its treasury, part of its futures insurance fund, and its SAFU fund. Its co-CEO Richard Teng summed it up in one sentence: “our users will not bear the financial impact.” Withdrawals reopened on November 1 on 15 networks.
Can an exchange guarantee it will never be hacked?
No, and OKX’s founder is the first to say so. In a message posted on X on November 2, Star Xu indicated that OKX was not affected by the incident, while acknowledging that no platform can claim to be safe from an attack. Its teams track stolen funds, identify suspicious addresses, and take available measures to prevent their laundering through the exchange and OKX’s DEX aggregator.
Star Xu also called for a joint industry response: “We need a real-time alert system that allows participants to share information immediately,” he wrote on X, quoted by Reuters.
The takeaway is that there are two very distinct risks. The first is hacking the platform itself, as with Binance: the loss is then borne by the exchange. In Europe, this is even a legal obligation. The MiCA regulation makes the provider responsible towards its customers for the loss of crypto assets due to an incident imputable to it (Article 75). OKX Europe Limited has been MiCA licensed by the Malta MFSA authority since January 27, 2025, with a passport valid in France.
The second risk is more common and much more frequent: someone takes control of your account. A fake site harvesting your credentials, spyware on your phone, a hijacked SIM card. The platform is not hacked, so nothing compels it to reimburse. And that is precisely Binance’s scenario, but on an individual scale: a compromised device granting access to withdrawals.
What does OKX Shield cover, and what does it not cover?
OKX Shield covers takeover of your account by a third party, not operations you validate yourself. The program is free and open to verified individual accounts of OKX Europe. The cap depends on account level: €100,000 for a standard account, regardless of traded volume, €250,000 for VIP 1 to 3, and €500,000 for VIP 4 and above.
OKX presents it as a discretionary program, neither insurance nor deposit guarantee: each claim is examined, and only one approved claim per client is possible (OKX Shield FAQ).
| Situation | Covered by OKX Shield? |
| Phishing: a third party logs in from an unusual environment and withdraws your funds | Yes, subject to review |
| Malware, trojan horse, or remote control of your device without your consent | Yes, subject to review |
| SIM swap used to take control of the account | Yes, subject to review |
| Transfer you initiate or validate yourself, even if deceived (fake support, scam) | No |
| Trading losses, market movements | No |
| Funds on OKX Wallet, OKX Pay, self-custody or DeFi | No |
| Platform hack itself, like Binance | Outside Shield scope: loss borne by the exchange (MiCA Article 75) |
Two conditions weigh heavily. Shield must be Active at the time of the events: if you disable a mandatory protection, it switches to Inactive until everything is restored. And the claim must be filed within 72 hours following the last unauthorized operation.
To activate OKX Shield, launched in Europe at the end of September (our presentation), and protect your account up to €100,000 (€500,000 for VIP 4 and above), click here.
How to activate OKX Shield?
From the app’s Security Center, OKX first checks account eligibility and device status, then requires six protections:
- A verified (KYC) and compliant account.
- A current device and associated devices that pass security checks.
- An activated passkey.
- Facial verification for large withdrawals.
- Withdrawal blocking from the website.
- Two-factor authentication set to “Always” for all operations.
Shield does not activate itself: once the list is checked, you must accept the terms and press “Activate OKX Shield.” The status then switches to Active, with your cap displayed (activation guide). If you are new to two-factor authentication, our 2FA guide explains the principle.
The Binance hack is not closed. The full technical report has not been published, South Korea summoned its exchanges on November 2 to tighten rules on hot wallets, and Star Xu’s call for a common alert system remains to be realized.
Favorable scenario: the sector pools its defense and the remaining 5% are covered smoothly. Unfavorable scenario: part of the funds still in the hackers’ hands is laundered, and trust in centralized platforms erodes. In both cases, the security of your account remains in your hands, and a few minutes of settings are enough to reinforce it.
Activate OKX Shield from the app’s Security Center: click here. No account yet? Register at OKX with code COINTRIBUNE. Reserved for verified individual accounts of OKX Europe (EEA); cap depending on account level, reimbursement subject to review.
FAQ
According to Binance, no: the exchange covered the loss with its own funds and says it had replaced 95% of the stolen assets by November 2, the rest consisting of less liquid tokens. Withdrawals reopened on November 1.
No. It is a discretionary and free program that can reimburse eligible losses after review. The displayed cap is a maximum, not a guaranteed amount.
That is not its role. Shield targets the takeover of your account. A platform hack is the responsibility of the exchange, which MiCA regulates in Europe.
