Summarize this article with:

Stablecoins are entering a new phase. Circle has just revealed an infrastructure dedicated to AI agents capable of executing autonomous payments via USDC. Behind this announcement, a clear goal emerges: to transform stablecoins into a native monetary layer for artificial intelligence.

Autonomous AI agent orchestrating stablecoin payments in a futuristic network

In brief

  • Circle launches Agent Stack, a suite of tools for AI agents to manage stablecoins autonomously.
  • USDC shows about 78 billion dollars in circulation, providing a solid base for this infrastructure.
  • Circle establishes itself in a global race for financial rails for autonomous AI.

Agent Stack: when AI meets stablecoins

On May 11, 2026, Circle unveils a suite of tools designed to allow AI agents to:

  • hold wallets;
  • discover services;
  • make programmable payments in stablecoins (specifically in USDC).

Named Agent Stack, this revolutionary infrastructure is based on several key components:

  • Agent Wallets: wallets dedicated to AI agents to manage funds with total autonomy
  • Circle CLI: a command-line interface for developers and AI agents
  • An agent service marketplace: so agents can discover and consume services
  • A nanopayments protocol: capable of processing USDC transactions without gas fees, from $0.000001 (designed for high-frequency payment flows between automated systems)

The most striking? Total autonomy, framed by strict rules

According to the press release published by Circle, the tools are designed to enable AI agents to make payments in stablecoins autonomously. All this, respecting predefined permissions, spending controls, and governance rules on compatible blockchains and payment networks.

Decoding: agents can act alone, but within a framework defined by their creators. And this is exactly what companies demanded (autonomy without losing control)!

USDC stablecoins: 78 billion dollars already in circulation

Circle does not come empty-handed. USDC is the second largest stablecoin by market capitalization, with about 78 billion dollars in circulation. This weight gives the Agent Stack immediate credibility. The fact is that developers do not start from scratch. They rely on a liquid, regulated infrastructure already massively adopted.

Especially since Circle is not alone in this field. In March, MoonPay launched an open-source wallet standard for AI agents. For its part, BitGo deployed a tool allowing agents to access wallet resources through natural language instructions. Visa and Stripe have also introduced tools dedicated to AI-driven payments.

With Agent Stack, however, Circle positions itself as the reference infrastructure of this emerging agentic economy.

One thing is certain: stablecoins are no longer just a value transfer tool. They are becoming the fuel of a new economic layer, that of autonomous AI agents. And Circle has just laid the first foundations of this infrastructure.
