A survey published by the Coinbase Institute and JL Partners has just shaken up certainties about the financial culture of young British people. According to this study shared with Cointelegraph, 80% of young people aged 16 to 25 in the United Kingdom consider crypto assets as their first entry point into the world of finance.

Young Britons hold up a cryptocurrency in front of a collapsing bank

In brief

  • 80% of 16-25 year olds in the United Kingdom consider crypto as the first financial product.
  • 65% recognize bitcoin, the most well-known financial product among under 25s in the UK ahead of all ISAs.
  • About 50% would trust a political party mastering blockchain and crypto more.
  • 1.3 million new potential pro-crypto voters if the voting age is lowered to 16 in the United Kingdom.
  • About 2/3 of young people call for government financial education on crypto.

Why has crypto dethroned traditional savings among young Britons?

The figure is clear. 65% of under 25s recognize bitcoin as a financial product. For many, this crypto asset represents more than any other savings or investment tool in the United Kingdom. By comparison, only 43% identify a Stocks & Shares ISA, and barely 20% a Help to Buy ISA.

According to the report, it is primarily a “crypto first, TradFi second” phenomenon. In other words, cryptocurrency has become the entry door to financial culture for an entire generation. Before opening a bank account, young Britons prefer to buy digital assets. Before knowing the state savings products, they know what a crypto wallet or exchange is.

Tom Duff Gordon, Vice President of International Policy at Coinbase, drives the point home:

The United Kingdom has about 1.3 million new voters if the government lowers the voting age to 16.

A reform currently under debate! According to him, the trend has changed. The fact is today’s voters have grown up with crypto. They will see political stances on digital assets as signals of credibility or incompetence.

How is crypto becoming a major political issue in the United Kingdom?

The figures from the survey turn crypto into an electoral topic. Indeed, nearly one in two young people says they would trust a political party more if it demonstrated a understanding of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. 26% would even go as far as voting for a party supporting a pro-crypto innovation policy.

The divide is even clearer according to political sensitivities. 58% of Reform voters and 46% of Labour voters give greater trust to parties embracing new technologies, including crypto. That’s not all! About two thirds of young people demand the government provide financial education about cryptocurrencies in schools.

Alun Cairns, former government minister and Vice President of the Blockchain All-Party Parliamentary Group, states this bluntly:

A new generation is arriving with fundamentally different expectations about money, technology, and opportunities.

According to him, parties that do not follow this demographic change will pay the price.

However, the British government is moving in the opposite direction on one specific point. It is considering a moratorium on political donations in crypto. A paradoxical decision that Tom Duff Gordon contests by reminding that blockchain offers perfect traceability of transactions, far superior to traditional cash.

The FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) already regulates crypto businesses via an AML/CTF framework. According to him, requiring crypto donations to go through registered companies would suffice.

In any case, the Coinbase Institute study says it without ambiguity: crypto is no longer a niche subject in the United Kingdom. It has become a generational fact. If this trend confirms across Europe, French legislators would do well to draw the same lessons.
