Altcoins no longer follow Bitcoin as before. According to Bitwise, the traditional altseason is fading in favor of a more selective era, where only useful projects survive. Discover why this revolution changes everything for crypto investors, and how to take advantage of it.

Bitwise's CIO announces the death of the traditional Altseason and a new crypto cycle for Altcoins.

In brief

  • The traditional Altseason where altcoins followed Bitcoin upwards is over according to Bitwise.
  • Altseason 2026, only crypto projects with real utility and concrete adoption will be rewarded.
  • Crypto investors must adopt a more selective approach to altcoins and analyze specific criteria to succeed.

The traditional altseason is over according to Bitwise

The era of altcoin seasons (altseason) where almost all cryptos benefited from a widespread rise after bitcoin seems to be over. Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, states: future cycles will be “non-traditional”. According to him, only altcoins with real utility and concrete adoption will survive.

This prediction is based on altcoin mentions on social media which have reached their lowest level in two years. While 38% of them hover around their all-time lows, worse than after the FTX crash. As a result, crypto investors now focus on bitcoin, leaving aside altcoins deemed too speculative.

Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, nuances this observation. According to him, those who did not benefit from past altseasons are often those who failed to identify opportunities. Yet, Santiment data confirms a widespread loss of interest in altcoins, marking a turning point in market dynamics.

Altseason 2026: How to invest in this new crypto era?

Faced with this transformation of altseasons, crypto investors must adopt a more rigorous approach. Indeed, the key lies in selecting projects with real adoption, an experienced team, and strategic partnerships. For example, altcoins linked to promising sectors like DeFi, AI, or blockchain infrastructures could stand out.

Moreover, diversification remains crucial, but it must be targeted. Rather than betting on a large number of altcoins, it is better to focus on a few promising projects while maintaining a significant allocation in bitcoin and ethereum. Finally, it is important to stay informed about regulatory developments and institutional adoption, which could influence market trends.

Traditional altseasons now belong to the past, giving way to a more selective and mature era according to Bitwise. Investors must therefore prioritize the quality and real utility of altcoins. This evolution offers unprecedented opportunities for Altseason 2026, but demands a more informed and strategic approach. And you, how do you plan to adapt your crypto portfolio to this new reality?
