JPMorgan opens its JPM Coin to institutions on Ethereum

Summarize this article with:

JPMorgan extends JPM Coin directly to Ethereum. Its dollar deposit token, JPMD, was already available on Base since November 2025. It can now be used by approved institutional clients on the Ethereum network to make payments, settle transactions on tokenized assets, or move collateral. Kinexys has already processed over 4 trillion dollars since its launch.

A bank token leaves traditional financial infrastructure to join the Ethereum mainnet.

In Brief

  • JPM Coin is now available for institutional clients on Ethereum.
  • JPMD enables 24/7 tokenized dollar transfers.
  • Kinexys currently processes about 7 billion dollars per day.

JPM Coin arrives directly on Ethereum

JPMorgan had already deployed JPM Coin on Base, Coinbase’s Layer 2 in November 2025. The bank now adds Ethereum itself. The choice is notably based on the depth of available liquidity on the network and the amount of already tokenized financial assets.

JPM Coin, whose ticker is JPMD, represents dollar deposits held at JPMorgan. An institutional client can therefore convert part of their bank deposit into tokens, transfer them on blockchain, and then convert them back.

Transactions can be carried out in a few seconds, including outside traditional banking hours. Emma Landriault, Global Head of Kinexys Labs, explains that crypto companies will notably be able to use JPMD for their on-chain payments. Financial institutions, on their side, will be able to settle transactions or post collateral. However, JPMD remains reserved for clients approved by JPMorgan. Ethereum thus becomes public for the infrastructure, but access to the token remains controlled.

Ethereum picks up a new building block of institutional finance

JPM Coin is not JPMorgan’s first operation on Ethereum. In December 2025, the bank had already launched MONY, its tokenized money market fund on Ethereum. The product started with 100 million dollars provided by JPMorgan and allows qualified investors to gain exposure to short-term debt securities directly on-chain.

A second tokenized fund followed in May. The movement therefore goes beyond simple payments. Ethereum begins to bring together on the same infrastructure tokenized bank money, money market funds, stablecoins, and other real-world assets.

JPM Coin notably brings an important piece: the cash needed for settlement. An institution can for example purchase a tokenized asset and use a also tokenized JPMorgan deposit to settle the transaction. Both legs of the operation can then operate on blockchain infrastructures.

Kinexys has grown considerably in the meantime. JPMorgan indicates that its blockchain platform has exceeded 4 trillion dollars in cumulative transactions. Its average daily volume now hovers around 7 billion dollars. In April, the bank still spoke of over 3 trillion cumulative and about 5 billion dollars per day. The growth is rapid.

JPM Coin remains different from a classic stablecoin

JPMD looks very much like a stablecoin on the surface. One token represents one dollar and can circulate on a public blockchain. The legal structure is different. JPM Coin represents a bank deposit at JPMorgan. The user must therefore be a client of the bank and meet its eligibility criteria. USDC or USDT, on the other hand, can circulate between wallets without each holder having an account with their partner bank.

JPMorgan is experimenting with several networks for this model. After Base and Ethereum, the bank also plans to extend JPM Coin to Canton Network, an infrastructure particularly oriented toward institutional financial markets.

The arrival on Ethereum remains symbolic however. JPMorgan long favored its own private blockchain infrastructures. It now directly uses public networks for certain financial products while retaining control over authorized users. The Ethereum network therefore does not simply host a new dollar token. It directly hosts deposits from one of the world’s largest banks in tokenized form.
