A tweet, a comma, and fifteen years closing this Monday, August 31, 2026, as Tim Cook says goodbye to Apple. On X, he writes that his title changes but his affection remains intact. Emotion is good but this Tuesday, September 1, the story continues without pause with John Ternus, who officially becomes Apple’s eighth CEO. Urgent questions await him already, notably about bitcoin and AI.

John Ternus becomes Apple CEO this Tuesday. Immediate challenges, silence on bitcoin... what awaits Tim Cook's successor.

In Brief

  • Tim Cook left his CEO position this Monday with a very personal farewell message on X, before becoming executive chairman.
  • John Ternus inherits a tight schedule: iPhone keynote on September 9, Siri under Gemini, OpenAI lawsuit, and rising memory costs.
  • Unlike Cook, who personally owns bitcoin, Ternus has never taken a position on the subject.

Who is the New Boss of Apple, John Ternus?

At 50 years old, John Ternus is not an unfamiliar face who fell from the sky. He joined Apple in 2001 within the Product Design team and climbed the ranks to become senior vice president in charge of hardware engineering in 2021. He is even the one who supervised the Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro. Where Tim Cook was above all a manager turned global diplomat, Ternus has a reputation as a decisive executor obsessed with the product. Tim Cook himself described him as brilliant, wonderful, and competent.

The Hot Issues Awaiting John Ternus: Keynote, AI, SIRI

There is currently a pile of files in Apple’s offices and John Ternus doesn’t have time to get familiar with the chair. Only eight days separate Ternus’ taking office from the next Apple keynote, scheduled for September 9, 2026. In this annual event, he will present:

  • The new generation of iPhone;
  • Probably the very first foldable iPhone model.

But the most explosive file is AI. Because Apple has chosen to build its next-generation Siri on Google’s Gemini technology. Ternus will therefore have to transform this admission of technological weakness into a convincing product. Otherwise, Apple risks losing the race for consumer AI forever. Added to this is the legal dispute where Apple accuses OpenAI of stealing trade secrets. Financially, the current spike in memory chip prices directly threatens Apple’s margins.

Will John Ternus Take on bitcoin?

In fifteen years at the head of Apple, Tim Cook never hid that he personally owned Bitcoin for about three years already. But he always kept his personal treasure separate from Apple’s balance sheet because for him, people don’t buy Apple stock to be exposed to crypto.

Unlike Cook, John Ternus has never made any public declaration or taken any position. Bitcoiners certainly hope for a change of doctrine. It is only a hypothesis but in a world where stablecoins and crypto payments are slowly gnawing at the giants of tech’s ground, Ternus’s silence may not last.

September 9, 2026, will give a first look at John Ternus at the head of Apple. Between decisions on AI, managing the OpenAI lawsuit, and possibly a first public statement on bitcoin… the schedule is full. Only a few days left to know whether the new Apple CEO simply plans to manage Tim Cook’s legacy or really carve his own path.
