By setting a deadline of about ten days to decide between a diplomatic agreement and military action, Donald Trump has placed Iran back at the heart of a high international tension sequence. The American president stated he is contemplating a limited military strike to pressure Tehran on its nuclear program, even as discussions are ongoing. Between strategic pressure, naval deployment, and a tight timetable, Washington and Iran are now moving along a particularly fragile diplomatic line.

Under a dramatic night sky, silhouettes of military aircraft symbolizing Trump’s intention to carry out targeted strikes on Iran.

In brief

  • Donald Trump contemplates a limited military strike against Iran to pressure Tehran’s nuclear program.
  • The American president sets a deadline of about ten days to decide between a diplomatic agreement and military action.
  • Discussions are ongoing in Switzerland, while Iran prepares a draft agreement to submit to the United States.
  • Washington strengthens its military presence in the region, deploying aircraft carriers and major naval assets.

A limited strike wielded as a diplomatic lever

Donald Trump indicated that he was considering military action to force Iran into concluding an agreement on its nuclear program. The key statements are as follows :

  • He affirmed that the world would know “within the next ten days, probably” if an agreement would be found or if the United States would take military action ;
  • Questioned about the precise nature of a possible intervention, he replied: “I am not going to discuss it with you” ;
  • He added: “We will reach an agreement, one way or another” ;
  • The United States and its European allies suspect Iran of moving closer to developing a nuclear weapon, which Tehran has always denied.

At the same time, American and Iranian officials met in Switzerland and indicated that progress had been made. In Geneva, discussions took place as American pressure increased.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that his country is preparing “a potential draft agreement” to be delivered in the coming days to the American special envoy Steve Witkoff. The diplomatic sequence therefore fits into a tight timetable, publicly set by Washington.

The military reinforcement

Alongside the discussions, the United States has intensified its military presence in the region. The deployment includes the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald R Ford, which appears to be heading towards the area, as well as the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by destroyers, combat ships, and additional fighters.

Satellite images have shown that Iran has strengthened certain military installations. The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, published a message warning: “the American president repeatedly says that the United States has sent a warship towards Iran. Yet, a warship is dangerous military equipment”.

During the “Midnight Hammer” operation last July, American officials still mentioned the possibility of successful talks shortly before American strikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. The day before this operation, spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt read a statement in which Donald Trump indicated he would decide “within the next two weeks” whether to act or not. Today, no specific military target has been detailed, while options including a campaign that could last several weeks have reportedly been presented.

This crisis is observed by the BRICS bloc, attentive to any shifts in regional geopolitical balances.

The coming days will show if diplomatic pressure prevails over the demonstration of force. A military escalation would have repercussions far beyond the Middle East, impacting global strategic balances and financial markets, where nervousness could quickly be reflected, including in the bitcoin price.
