Crypto : The French Government Promises a Plan to Secure Investors
France is preparing a security crackdown in response to kidnappings related to crypto. The issue is no longer just financial. It is becoming police, political, and almost industrial.

In brief
- France is preparing new measures against crypto kidnappings.
- Visible holders are becoming targets for criminal groups.
- Physical security is becoming a central issue for the ecosystem.
Crypto moves out of the technical debate
France wants to strengthen its response against crypto kidnappings. Jean-Didier Berger, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, announced at the Paris Blockchain Week that new measures were being prepared. He is working with Laurent Nuñez on a broader plan expected in the coming weeks.
Crypto holders are no longer only exposed to hacking, scams, or platform bankruptcies. They are also becoming physical targets. This shift changes everything. It forces the State to treat crypto as a sensitive patrimonial asset.
A prevention platform has already been launched. It has reportedly attracted several thousand registrations. But this response remains a first step. Faced with the multiplication of attacks, France now seems willing to move from an alert logic to an organized protection logic.
A threat targeting visible holders
The latest reported case has renewed the pressure. In Burgundy, a mother and her child were kidnapped, while kidnappers demanded a ransom from the father, described as a crypto entrepreneur. The victims were released and several suspects arrested. This type of case reveals a simple flaw. Many crypto actors live in a culture of visibility. They talk about wallet, gains, business, bitcoin or altcoins on social networks. This exposure can become an open card for criminal groups.
Crypto security is therefore no longer limited to a well-guarded recovery phrase. It also concerns public habits, movements, close ones, and information left online. The safe is no longer just digital. It sometimes starts at the front door of the house.
Since the beginning of 2026, 41 kidnappings or attacks related to crypto have reportedly been recorded in France. This would amount to an incident roughly every two and a half days. The phenomenon does not come from nowhere. In 2025, physical attacks against cryptocurrency holders jumped 75% worldwide, with 72 cases confirmed by CertiK. France reportedly accounted for 19 cases, the highest level among followed countries.
This statistic damages the French image. Paris wants to attract talent, capital, and blockchain startups. But an innovative ecosystem cannot prosper if its entrepreneurs have to live as targets. Trust depends not only on regulation but also on real security. Users also have to strengthen their vigilance, especially since a scam recently circulated via a popular note-taking application.
