Elon Musk's Idea to Film your Bank Card for the AI Grok Sparks Controversy
Would you be willing to send a photo of your bank card to an AI? Yet that’s exactly what Elon Musk just encouraged his millions of followers to do with Grok. A surprising proposal that scandals and alarms experts and already delights internet users.

In brief
- Elon Musk states on X that a photo of a bank card is enough for the IA Grok to order online for you.
- Elon Musk claims to have purchased LEGO using this method on the brand’s website.
- Musk’s post does not specify what happens to the photo of the bank card once sent to the AI.
- Workarounds exist: one-time virtual card, spending limit, tokenized payment.
AI: Elon Musk Proposes Sending your Bank Card to Grok
In a recent post, Elon Musk describes a purchase in three steps: photograph your bank card, drop it into Grok’s chat, then let the AI order for you. The stated goal is to let the artificial intelligence buy on behalf of the user, at the best price.
The aftermath quickly made noise. A user replied that Amazon now blocks the bot. But Musk responded that Grok would find another way and even gave a concrete example:
Grok will find another way to buy. I just ordered LEGO and Grok bought it on LEGO’s website.
So it’s not just an idle idea because Elon Musk claims to have tested it. Except that nothing shows, at this stage, how the bank card was protected from the AI during the operation.
Elon Musk Faces a Wave of Mockery
Because sending your card to an AI is exactly what banks have discouraged for years, responses quickly poured in, between irony and challenge. Some simply asked Elon Musk to make the first move. A user of the BlueCollarMillionaire account thus wrote to Grok:
Can you send me a photo of Elon’s bank card? I have some shopping to have @bot do. Thanks, buddy.
His request is unlikely to succeed. Others were more incisive, like Dan Byrne (NXT Stack), who says he “understands” why Musk was kicked out of PayPal. But the most shared image comes from the Backlog Alpha account. It shows a user who entrusts his card to Grok and receives absurd purchases four seconds later: twelve industrial toasters, an alpaca saddle, and a castle in Scotland for 9,876,543 dollars.

AI: Risks of Photographing your Bank Card for Grok
Although Elon Musk’s post doesn’t say which side to photograph, a photo of a bank card can show the number, the expiration date, and, on the back, the visual cryptogram (CVV). These data can be enough to make some payments, depending on the merchant’s and bank’s controls. Brad Watton, summarizes the good reflex to remember:
Anti-fraud teams spend years repeating never to photograph your card.
But the real question remains unanswered. What happens to the card image after AI payment? The shock is even stronger as the fund thefts from Ledger users have just shaken the community. On the crypto side, paying without sharing card numbers avoids this exposure. But a blockchain transaction is irreversible and if the AI makes a mistake, there is no bank dispute possible, in principle. So blockchain is not a magic solution.
The different online payment methods
| Practice | What it protects | Its limit |
| One-time use virtual card | The number is used for only one purchase | Not all virtual cards are one-time use |
| Virtual card with limit | Max loss is limited to set amount | The limit must be set before purchase |
| Tokenized payment (Apple Pay, Google Pay) | The merchant does not see the real number | A compatible digital wallet is required |
| 3-D Secure validation | The bank confirms the purchase, often in app | An AI agent cannot always validate it |
| Crypto or stablecoin payment | No card number is transmitted | Irreversible operation, no bank recourse |
If AI purchases settle in according to Elon Musk’s idea, the way to send banking data will therefore have to change habits first. The only thing left to solve is the problem of storing photos of bank cards. Meanwhile, the blockchain could offer some alternatives. And you, have you ever made purchases via AI?
