Predictive Markets Hit a Historic $20 Billion Milestone Thanks to the World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup marked a new step for the blockchain ecosystem. According to data published by Chainalysis, predictive markets recorded unprecedented activity thanks to the worldwide excitement around the competition. Decentralized betting, digital collectibles, and the participation of hundreds of thousands of users illustrated the magnitude of the phenomenon. These results also show that major sports competitions accelerate the use of blockchain-based applications.

In Brief
- The 2026 World Cup generated $20 billion in volume on blockchain predictive markets.
- Over 400,000 wallets participated in blockchain-based betting during the tournament.
- Markets related to the competition accounted for 63% of the total activity on prediction platforms.
- FIFA Collect NFT trades reached $24 million, with over 100,000 tickets distributed via blockchain.
Predictive Markets Concentrate the Bulk of the Tournament’s Activity
The predictive markets related to the 2026 World Cup generated a total volume of $20 billion before and during the tournament. Over the five weeks of the competition, users wagered approximately $5.7 billion on bets recorded on the blockchain. This dynamic accounted for nearly 63% of all activity observed on prediction platforms during this period.
Predictive markets also attracted a very broad international participation. More than 400,000 wallets placed bets based on blockchain during the event. According to a report by Chainalysis, users from all continents except Antarctica took part in this activity. The United States and China recorded the largest attributable volumes, followed by Canada, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
Global Adoption Accompanied by a Low Level of Illicit Activity
The report highlights that predictive markets maintained a high level of compliance despite the significant volumes handled. Less than 1% of wallets used during the World Cup were linked to illicit actors. Chainalysis nevertheless identified about $5.4 million in flows from sanctioned entities or other sources considered illicit.
This proportion remains limited relative to the amounts exchanged during the competition. The data thus show that massive participation was not accompanied by a corresponding increase in non-compliant activities. Predictive markets have therefore demonstrated their ability to attract a global audience while maintaining a low level of transactions associated with high-risk wallets.
FIFA NFTs Strengthen the Blockchain Ecosystem Around the Event
Beyond betting, the World Cup also boosted digital collectibles. Users traded about $24 million of FIFA Collect NFTs during the tournament. In parallel, more than 100,000 match tickets were distributed via this blockchain-based platform.
The data also show that wallets associated with authorized entities accounted for less than 0.01% of FIFA Collect users. Chainalysis links this result notably to identity verification procedures implemented on the platform. In this context, predictive markets developed alongside other uses of blockchain, reinforcing the digital ecosystem created around the competition. Predictive markets thus appear as one of the primary drivers of this evolution observed during the World Cup.
These results indicate that major international events could continue to promote the use of blockchain across various fields. As participation expands, platforms are expected to continue strengthening their compliance measures to support this evolution.
