The CEO of Coinbase Criticizes Crypto Projects Now Betting on AI
The cryptocurrency sector is going through a new phase where several companies are redirecting their communication towards AI. This evolution is causing reactions within the industry, notably at Coinbase. Its CEO, Brian Armstrong, believes that this opposition between blockchain and artificial intelligence is based on a misreading of technological developments. According to him, these two fields should not be considered competitors but as technologies capable of working together to support future digital uses.

Coinbase Rejects the Opposition Between Blockchain and AI
Brian Armstrong took a stand against a trend gaining ground in the digital asset industry. Several companies now emphasize artificial intelligence more than blockchain to capture investors’ attention. For the Coinbase leader, this approach is based on a scarcity logic that pits two technologies which are actually complementary.
In an article published on X Sunday, he explained that cryptocurrencies represent a general infrastructure, comparable to the Internet or electricity.

According to him, they are not meant to compete with AI, but to provide the foundations necessary for the development of the next innovations. He summarizes this vision with a simple phrase: it is an “and,” not an “or.” Coinbase thus defends a strategy where blockchain and artificial intelligence progress together.
This stance comes as several companies change their image to emphasize artificial intelligence more. Brian Armstrong believes this shift in discourse does not necessarily reflect a deep transformation of activities. He prefers to remind that blockchain infrastructures retain a central role in the development of future digital services. For Coinbase, this evolution therefore does not question the usefulness of decentralized networks.
The phenomenon also recalls certain trends observed in previous technological cycles. In an analysis published in April, the Wall Street Journal compared this AI wave to strategic changes during the Internet bubble or the 2017 blockchain hype. The cited historical data shows that companies incorporating popular terms into their names often see an average short-term stock price increase of over 50%, a movement more related to trends than structural evolution.
A Strategy Focused on Automated Payments From Intelligent Agents
Beyond this criticism, Brian Armstrong also presents the direction Coinbase wants to take. He believes that autonomous software agents will have a financial infrastructure with which, in the long term, they could conduct more daily transactions than human users.
AI agents will need their own financial infrastructure and will eventually perform a daily transaction volume far higher than all humans combined. They cannot open bank accounts, they cannot wait three days for a transfer, and they reside in only one country. They need a programmable real-time currency (this is where crypto comes in).

For him, traditional financial systems have several limitations, especially because these programs cannot open bank accounts or wait several days for a transfer. On this point, crypto remains their ideal solution.
And to meet these needs, the CEO of Coinbase mentioned an ecosystem the company is developing, called Agentic Finance, or AiFi. This approach relies on several technological building blocks already implemented by the company. The platform notably relies on the x402 protocol, now governed by the X402 Foundation; its Base blockchain; and Circle Internet’s USDC stablecoin to enable automated payments between software.
The company is also continuing to deploy new tools. In June, Coinbase launched accounts intended for agents capable of directly making payments and expenses. Last week, the company also announced that Coinbase Business users can now accept payments made by these agents thanks to the x402 protocol. The goal is to prepare an environment where transactions can flow automatically between different digital services using AI.
This strategy illustrates the vision defended by Brian Armstrong. Rather than replacing the blockchain with artificial intelligence, he wants to build an infrastructure capable of meeting the economic needs of future autonomous software. In this approach, blockchain becomes the support for financial exchanges carried out without human intervention.
The Ecosystem Highlights Several Technical Challenges
While this vision appeals to part of the sector, several players point out that significant obstacles remain. Current financial infrastructures were not designed to allow instant exchanges between machines. According to them, this evolution requires much more than payment automation.

Agents need money, not just any money, but money that moves at machine speed. Our entire financial system has evolved for human interaction. Money is only the first link in the chain that still needs adapting. The same scenario is looming for computing, data, and everything else.

He explains that the entire current financial infrastructure was designed to meet human users’ needs. In his view, the challenges also concern computing power, data, and the entire technological chain. This analysis aligns with Coinbase’s vision, which considers blockchain as a base for future automated exchanges.
Other developers emphasize security issues. They remind that allowing unchecked software to directly control financial assets can create significant counterparty risk. The NeoSoul AI project states in its comment on Armstrong’s post that “setting up an automated economy requires additional mechanisms before digital wallets can be entrusted to autonomous agents.”
According to this project, the reputation and memory of agents must become essential elements of this ecosystem. Without reliable history, it would be difficult to grant sufficient trust to a program in charge of managing funds. This reflection shows that the development of AI-related uses will also depend on technical guarantees capable of supporting this automation.
Brian Armstrong’s statements thus open a broader debate on the evolution of the cryptocurrency industry. Coinbase defends a complementarity between blockchain and artificial intelligence, while several players recall the challenges still present. Future technological advances will determine whether this convergence is accompanied by an infrastructure robust enough to meet the needs of future autonomous agents.
