Bitcoin and Ether spot ETFs recorded $530 million in net outflows on November 5, as a stock market collapse wiped out nearly $3 trillion in market capitalization on Wall Street. These funds were supposed to bring crypto closer to traditional finance; they also accelerate the transmission of its panic periods.

The scene illustrates the massive outflows of 0 million from Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs, amid a Wall Street downturn. In the foreground, several panicked investors watch torrents of coins escape from two gigantic baskets representing crypto ETFs. The amount 0,000,000 highlights the scale of the capital outflows. In the background, the New York Stock Exchange and the American flag recall the origin of the financial turbulence. On the right, a roaring bear and a downward red chart symbolize bearish pressure. Overall, it reflects investor fear and the fragility of financial markets.

In brief

  • Bitcoin and Ether ETFs recorded $530 million in outflows on November 5, amid the Wall Street plunge.
  • Stock market panic spread to the crypto market, driving bitcoin below $76,000.
  • Capital outflows continue despite a brief rebound of ETFs after the U.S. elections.
  • Institutional investors reduce crypto exposure amid market volatility.
  • Institutional adoption facilitates crypto investments, without guaranteeing protection against sharp declines.

ETFs transmitted panic to the crypto market

The twelve American Bitcoin ETFs suffered $430.23 million in net outflows in one session. Funds dedicated to Ether lost an additional $99.98 million. No Bitcoin ETF recorded positive inflows during the day.

These outflows accompanied a general decline in risk assets. The Nasdaq lost 5.5%, its largest drop since April 2025, while the S&P 500 fell 4.4%. Bitcoin fell back below $76,000 and Ether towards $2,237.

The distribution of withdrawals shows that distrust affected major managers :

  • Fidelity’s FBTC lost $199.87 million ;
  • BlackRock’s IBIT recorded $105 million in outflows ;
  • Grayscale’s GBTC suffered $49.9 million in withdrawals ;
  • Franklin Templeton and VanEck funds lost $32.92 and $23.64 million respectively ;
  • BlackRock’s ETHA recorded $75.2 million in outflows ;
  • Its staking Ether ETF, ETHB, lost $22 million.

ETFs did not necessarily trigger the cryptocurrency decline. Daily flows measure net creations and redemptions of shares, without revealing all investor strategies. Nevertheless, their synchronization with the stock fall shows that crypto allocations are now aligned with other positions held on Wall Street.

When a manager reduces portfolio risk, they may simultaneously sell tech stocks, Bitcoin ETFs, and Ether ETFs. Crypto no longer constitutes an isolated pocket: it enters directly into traditional arbitrages.

One day of inflows did not break five sessions of outflows

The reversal seems even more brutal as Bitcoin and Ether ETFs had attracted $127.6 million the day before. Investors seemed then to welcome the end of uncertainty surrounding the U.S. midterm elections.

At Fidelity, the contrast is particularly stark. FBTC received $236.7 million on November 4 before losing nearly $200 million the very next session. This round-trip movement indicates that post-election inflows were more of a tactical repositioning than sustainable accumulation.

The underlying trend had in fact started before the stock market panic. BlackRock’s IBIT suffered five consecutive sessions of outflows, totaling about $1.04 billion. The entire pool of American Bitcoin ETFs lost nearly $1.51 billion since October 30, despite the brief spike on November 4.

Bitcoin funds now report about $869.8 million in net outflows since the beginning of November. On the Ether side, outflows reach nearly $272 million, despite the $53 million inflows the previous day.

These figures temper the idea that institutional investors automatically buy every dip. They may use a pullback to accumulate but also quickly withdraw funds when volatility exceeds their risk limits.

Institutional adoption brings capital, not a floor

The correction started with AI-related stocks. Investors fear that planned restrictions on data centers, high financing costs, and payback delays will reduce the sector’s prospects. Nvidia lost 9.3% and AMD 17.3%, while the Nasdaq entered correction territory.

President Donald Trump called the session “one of the worst days in market history”. The statement is political, but the scale of the move remains exceptional: U.S. stocks erased post-election gains, while more than $1 billion in leveraged crypto positions were forcibly closed.

The existence of ETFs facilitates capital flows into Bitcoin and Ether. However, it does not guarantee any minimum price. The same infrastructures that allow rapid investing also make exits easier when institutional portfolios shift to defensive mode.

The real test will thus be less the next Bitcoin rebound than the ETFs’ reaction after Wall Street stabilizes. If flows turn positive again, the November 5 session will appear as a risk adjustment. If outflows continue, it will rather mark the start of a deeper institutional disengagement.
