Yann LeCun raises 1 billion dollars to rethink AI from Paris

The most celebrated French researcher in the world, Yann LeCun, has just succeeded in one of the most spectacular fundraising rounds in European AI. Behind this success, a radical ambition: to turn away from ChatGPT and chatbots to build an artificial intelligence that truly understands the world. But how far can this vision go?

One billion dollars to change the paradigm

On March 10, 2026, in Paris, Yann LeCun formalized the fundraising of his startup AMI: 1 billion dollars raised from top-tier investors. 

Toyota, Nvidia, and Samsung responded, as well as two iconic figures of Silicon Valley, Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google. 

The young startup’s valuation was already 3 billion euros before this operation. A strong signal.

For twelve years, LeCun led AI research at Meta. However, he gradually opposed the industry’s dominant strategy, centered on large language models like chatbots.

According to him, these systems excel at text generation but do not truly understand the world.

AMI therefore wants to change approach. The company develops models capable of processing multiple types of data: images, environment, movement, or physical interactions. The goal: to create an AI that reasons like a human or an animal facing reality.

Industrial AI, a new technological battlefield

AMI’s strategy fits into an emerging trend: the industrialization of artificial intelligence. Unlike conversational assistants, these new systems target concrete applications.

For example:

• optimize the operation of an airplane engine;
• improve the efficiency of a power plant;
• accelerate the development of robotics;
• strengthen autonomous driving systems.

AMI plans to dedicate its first year to fundamental research. Industrial applications are expected to follow quickly, with the goal of producing, within five years, AI systems capable of solving complex problems across various sectors.

This ambition comes as the French ecosystem accelerates. According to the organization Hub France IA, 972 artificial intelligence companies are now active in France, a spectacular increase in one year.

For Emmanuel Macron, this momentum illustrates the emergence of a more sovereign European AI. The French president moreover hailed LeCun’s initiative, seeing it as “a new chapter in artificial intelligence.”

In a context of technological rivalry between the United States, China, and Europe, the battle for AI is no longer only played on language models. It is now shifting towards systems capable of interacting with the real world.

Yann LeCun’s record fundraising may mark the start of a new cycle in artificial intelligence. The goal is no longer just to generate text but to understand and act in the physical world. If this vision materializes, it could transform the global industry and reposition France as a major player in the next technological revolution.
