Bitcoin pioneers sometimes carry quite awkward digital baggage. Some earned their BTC by playing, tinkering, or testing unprestigious services. At the time, no one stored these virtual crumbs like a gold bar in a safe. Then forgetfulness, bad luck, or an old hard drive turned these absurd tokens into a modern treasure hunt.

A man searches an old wallet using holographic AI, suddenly discovering five forgotten bitcoins amid a chaotic digital landscape

In Brief

  • Claude helped Cprkrn recover five bitcoins blocked since 2015 in an old wallet.
  • AI did not break Bitcoin, but sorted old files and linked the right clues.
  • The recovered wallet was worth about 397,000 to 400,000 dollars according to available sources.
  • The case rekindles debate on millions of dormant, lost, or potentially recoverable BTC.

Claude Finds a Bitcoin Wallet Buried Under Eleven Years of Digital Dust

This story contrasts with that of James Howells, the unfortunate computer scientist who lost his 8,000 BTC in a British landfill. Cprkrn, a pseudonymous X user, claims to have recovered 5 bitcoins blocked since 2015. The jackpot was around 397,000 to 400,000 dollars, according to estimates shared by several media outlets.

At first, the story sounded like a forum legend, with an old Mac, a forgotten notebook, and a ghost wallet file. Then blockchain data showed that the address starting with 14VJyS moved on May 13, after more than eleven years of silence.

Cprkrn says he searched for a long time, even trying trillions of combinations. His victory cry on X set off a firestorm:

[…] CLAUDE JUST CRACKED THIS THING. THANK YOU @AnthropicAI THANK YOU @DarioAmodei I AM GOING TO NAME MY CHILD AFTER YOU.

Yet, Claude did not rob Bitcoin. AI mostly followed the right tracks in a personal mess.

AI Plays the Bloodhound, but Does Not Break Bitcoin’s Safe

The distinction deserves a scalpel, not a marketing hammer. Claude did not break Bitcoin’s encryption, nor change the seed phrase rules. AI supposedly sifted through more than a gigabyte of data: two Macs, two external drives, Apple Notes, iCloud Mail, Gmail, and X messages.

It then supposedly found an old wallet file from December 2019, prior to the password change.

The comment by VC Intern coldly sums up the case:

Claude did not break any encryption and did not brute force anything. The guy poured his entire old university hard drive into it. Claude found the forgotten wallet file, linked it to the seed phrase he already had, then perfectly unfolded the logic of btcrecover.

Then Claude allegedly helped fix a detail between sharedKey and password in btcrecover. The lock was less mathematical than human.

Lost BTC Could Awaken a New Recovery Industry

This case stirs an old fear in the bitcoin market: lost coins may not always be dead. Estimates cited range between 2.3 and 4 million BTC definitively inaccessible.

Glassnode also mentions more than 7 million coins dormant for years. Fidelity noted that more than 566 BTC per day entered the “ancient” category, against 450 BTC mined daily since the 2024 halving.

Now, AI mostly changes the cost curve. Cprkrn reportedly spent about 15 dollars with Claude, after professional trials billed near 250 dollars per failure. Wallet recovery could thus shift from private detective to neuronal “search engine”.

Yet, the trap remains venomous. Sending wallet files, seeds, or private keys to a cloud AI can expose the funds.

Numbers That Wake Up the Key Hunters

  • The bitcoin wallet had remained inactive since 2015;
  • The BTC price currently reaches 78,985 dollars;
  • Claude is said to have cost about 15 dollars in computations;
  • Between 2.3 and 4 million BTC are believed lost;
  • More than 7 million bitcoins have been dormant for a long time.

The next shiver no longer only comes from forgotten passwords. A researcher broke a 15-bit elliptic key with a public quantum computer, winning 1 bitcoin. This breakthrough, 512 times more powerful than the previous record, is already scaring poorly prepared crypto vaults.
