Bitcoin's $80K Recovery Faces A Tough Inflation Test
Bitcoin briefly regained 81000 dollars after the release of the US PCE inflation, in line with expectations. Behind this limited rebound, historical data show however that this indicator rarely gives a lasting direction to the crypto market.

In brief
- Bitcoin briefly rebounded towards 81000 dollars after the release of the US PCE inflation, in line with expectations.
- Annual inflation accelerates to 3.6%, which increases fears of a Fed rate hike in December.
- Historical data show that Bitcoin’s reactions to PCE releases rarely give a lasting trend.
- Keeping bitcoin above 80000 dollars will depend mainly on real rates and the Fed’s upcoming decisions.
The PCE reassures without really improving the monetary scenario
The PCE price index rose 0.5% in September and 3.6% year-on-year, after 3.4% in August. Excluding food and energy, core inflation reached 0.3% month-over-month and 3.1% year-on-year. All four results matched economists’ forecasts, sparing the market an immediate negative surprise.
Bitcoin reacted by momentarily rising above 80000 dollars, reaching a peak near 81000 dollars. However, this movement looks more like relief than a bullish validation: inflation is accelerating and remains significantly above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target.
The main elements of the report paint a less favorable picture than a simple BTC rebound might suggest:
- Annual PCE inflation rises from 3.4% to 3.6% ;
- Core PCE accelerates from 3% to 3.1% year-on-year ;
- Nominal spending increases by 0.5%, but almost stagnates in real terms ;
- Real disposable income decreases by 0.3% over the month ;
- Household savings rate falls to 3.8%.
This combination places the Fed in an uncomfortable situation. Prices accelerate while inflation-adjusted purchasing power weakens. A rate hike would help fight inflation but could also weigh more heavily on consumption and assets sensitive to financial conditions.
The market now estimates about an 85% probability of a rate hike in December. Such a scenario would keep the remuneration of the dollar and short-term bonds at a high level, mechanically reducing bitcoin’s relative appeal.
The PCE announcements give almost no advantage to bitcoin
BTC’s immediate reaction does not allow predicting its trajectory for the coming days. A study of 114 PCE releases since 2017 shows that bitcoin varies on average by 0.63% during the first hour, only 1.2 times its usual movement over a similar period.
The direction is even less conclusive. BTC finishes the first hour higher in only 42% of cases. After one day, this proportion rises to 53%, with a median performance limited to 0.09%. In other words, the odds of an increase remain close to a random draw.
The initial movement also reverses in 34% of releases before the fourth hour. This frequency explains why a push above 81000 dollars alone does not constitute a reliable technical signal.
The previous release provides a telling example. On September 30, a PCE lower than expected made bitcoin rise by 1.5% during the first hour. Twenty-four hours later, the entire gain had disappeared. The BTC then lost 0.56% over seven days.
The new reading angle is therefore to consider the PCE as a volatility trigger, not a directional indicator. The evolution of bond yields after digesting the figures matters more than bitcoin’s initial candle.
The 80000-dollar threshold now depends on real rates
The report released on Thursday creates no new monetary scenario: it confirms the one operators had already integrated. BTC’s rebound precisely comes from this absence of surprise. To turn this relief into a lasting recovery, the market would need a drop in rate expectations or real bond yields.
Conversely, a rise in yields would reinforce pressure around 80000 dollars. Investors can obtain higher remuneration on assets deemed less risky, while bitcoin distributes no income. Its price then depends more on inflows and operators’ willingness to accept volatility.
The next decisive statistic might therefore not be the PCE itself. Employment figures, CPI inflation, and Fed statements will determine if a December rate hike becomes almost certain. The October PCE report, expected November 25, will then verify if September’s acceleration was temporary.
Bitcoin currently maintains the psychological threshold of 80000 dollars, but the rebound does not change its main obstacle: inflation at 3.6% leaves little room for the Fed to ease financial conditions.
