Peter Schiff Sees A Buying Opportunity In Gold's Selloff

Gold, silver, tech stocks, and bitcoin simultaneously declined on October 30, contrary to the usual behavior of safe havens. For Peter Schiff, this widespread sell-off signals a liquidity tension, but it may also reflect a temporary rush to the dollar amid margin calls.

The scene illustrates Peter Schiff's warning regarding the economic tensions that a drop in gold could signal. In the foreground, the economist appears concerned, pointing toward a massive downward red arrow cutting through gold bars. This movement symbolizes the fall of the precious metal and the concerns it raises. In the background, a globe, lightning bolts, and threatening clouds evoke global economic instability. A cracked bank, oil facilities, and bearish charts reinforce this atmosphere of crisis. Overall, it presents the decline in gold as a potential warning sign, without predicting a certain crisis.

In brief

  • Gold, silver, Bitcoin, and tech stocks fell simultaneously on October 30.
  • Peter Schiff believes this widespread drop could reveal liquidity tensions in the markets.
  • Facing margin calls, some investors sell their assets to quickly recover dollars.
  • Rising bond yields, persistent inflation, and soaring oil add pressure on gold.
  • The November 2 session could help distinguish a temporary correction from a deeper liquidity crisis.

The gold drop mostly reveals a race for liquidity

Spot gold lost $141.60, or 3.52%, to fall back around $3880 per ounce. Silver dropped even more sharply, surrendering 6.06% to around $49. Gold futures recorded their lowest close since October 2025.

This move surprised, as geopolitical tensions, the stock decline, and the Binance hack would normally have supported precious metals. However, the simultaneous drop across multiple asset classes suggests some investors were seeking cash rather than a defensive investment.

The session figures show the extent of this liquidity need :

  • Spot gold lost nearly $150 in one day ;
  • Silver dropped more than $3 ;
  • The S&P 500 fell 1.8%, its worst session since June ;
  • The Nasdaq Composite declined 2.9% ;
  • Intel plunged nearly 29% after disappointing forecasts ;
  • Bitcoin hit $76,368 after the Binance hack.

When a highly leveraged stock position drops, the investor sometimes must provide new collateral. Then, they may sell their most liquid assets, even those with good long-term prospects. In this case, gold becomes a source of liquidity rather than an immediate refuge.

Peter Schiff believes this correction results from “a short-term liquidity problem” likely to appear in other markets as soon as the following week.

He thus presents the metal drop as a buying opportunity, not the end of their bullish cycle. This reading remains a forecast: a widespread sell-off alone does not confirm a liquidity crisis.

Oil and rates reinforce the preference for the dollar

Liquidity demand is not the only explanation. Gold also faces pressure from a less favorable monetary environment. The ten-year U.S. rate hovered near 4.93%, while the Federal Reserve held its policy rate between 3.75% and 4%.

A high bond yield raises gold’s opportunity cost, which pays no interest. Investors can earn a return holding Treasury bonds or dollar cash without bearing the volatility of precious metals.

Inflation further complicates the scenario. The core PCE index increased 3.1% year-over-year in September, while the U.S. economy grew 3.4% annualized in Q3. These figures give the Fed little reason to ease policy soon.

West Texas Intermediate oil also rose above $104 following an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. A prolonged energy price increase can reignite consumer prices and reinforce rate hike expectations.

This combination (expensive oil, persistent inflation, and high yields) explains why gold can fall despite geopolitical worries. Investors do not necessarily reject its store-of-value role but temporarily favor an immediately available and yielding dollar.

Bitcoin faced similar pressure, worsened by the $6.3 billion theft at Binance. Its drop thus does not prove the market equates it with gold. Both assets were simply sold during the same liquidity search, partly for different reasons.

The November 2 session will separate alert from forced selling

Peter Schiff’s hypothesis can be tested as soon as markets reopen Monday, November 2. Another stock drop accompanied by gold falling would indicate liquidity needs continue to spread.

Conversely, Wall Street stabilization and metal rebounds would suggest the forced selling was limited to one session. The break of gold below its support near $3975 might have mechanically accelerated sell orders without signaling a deeper crisis.

Three indicators will help decide: bond yields, the dollar, and margin calls on tech stocks. If rates and the greenback keep rising, gold could remain under pressure even without a liquidity crisis.

The most important signal is thus not that gold and bitcoin dropped together. It lies in capital destinations. In a shock, investors chose neither metal nor crypto but dollar liquidity. The duration of this move will determine whether it is a temporary adjustment or the start of a broader financial tension.
