Recent data published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) are rather positive concerning inflation, which has substantially decreased in March. Here is what you need to know about this particularly monitored economic trend by French financiers.

Économie : Recul de l'inflation de la France en mars

A French economy at +0.2% inflation in March

According to the latest trends published by INSEE, the French economy experienced a new episode of inflation slowdown in March. This dynamic is characterized by a price increase that remains at +2.3% on an annual basis.

INSEE explains this decline in French economic inflation by moderation in the price growth of food products, services, and tobacco. This trend is also observed in the energy sector and manufactured products.

This decrease marks a deceleration compared to the previous month, where inflation was established at +3.0%. Meanwhile, on a monthly basis, inflation also showed a slight decrease, reaching +0.2% in March, compared to +0.9% in February.

However, INSEE points out that prices of manufactured products have accelerated, due to the seasonal price increase of clothing after the winter sales. Meanwhile, prices of food and services remained stable over the month.

It must be said that these changes in inflation are of particular importance to investors. This is especially related to the impact of these data on central banks’ monetary policies.

Indeed, with inflation ideally aiming for 2%, rate hike policies are generally applied to maintain this balance. Currently, this balance prevails. However, any indication of a potential decrease could be closely scrutinized by investors.

Moreover, it should be noted that on a European level, the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), considered a benchmark indicator, has evolved. It recorded a 2.4% year-on-year increase in March, after a rise of 3.2% in February.

This highlights a similar dynamic of inflation slowdown on a continental scale, mirroring the fluctuations observed in France. Inflation of the French economy remains a crucial indicator for assessing the country’s economic health and guiding future monetary policies.
