The OCC has just published the final rule implementing the GENIUS Act. By January 18, 2027, stablecoin issuers must strictly comply with US banking standards and fully back their crypto tokens, under penalty of a total ban on operations in the United States.
A slight increase in interest rates on bank deposits could slow the growth of stablecoins. This is the finding of a study by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), which highlights competition between bank savings and these cryptocurrencies pegged to traditional currencies. However, the effect varies depending on the players: Circle's USDC appears more sensitive to this competition than Tether's USDT.
Russia continues the integration of cryptocurrencies in its financial system, with a growing role for traditional banks. Sberbank, the largest banking institution in the country, has just obtained authorization to trade digital assets. The bank is already preparing operations on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT in its application. This advance accompanies the establishment of a market regulated by the Russian authorities, who want to organize the exchange and custody of cryptocurrencies.
During this month of October, USDT is set to make its return on Bitcoin, thanks to Utexo, an infrastructure supported by Tether and built around the RGB protocol. Thanks to this launch, confidential transfers, direct exchanges between BTC and USDT as well as loans secured by native bitcoin will be possible, without exposing all operators on the public blockchain.
A report by Democratic senators accuses USDT of being a pillar of Iran's parallel banking system. Tether responded the same day, highlighting nearly 550 million dollars frozen in 2026. The episode revives the question of stablecoin regulation.
Binance puts 100 million dollars on Circle and gives a serious boost to USDC. The exchange acquired 1.237 million shares of the stablecoin issuer at 80.84 dollars each, while signing a new five-year business agreement. Circle and Tether froze on Friday part of the assets of an address linked to the Bitget hack, about 318,000 dollars of stablecoins. The amount remains marginal compared to the 387.5 million dollars stolen. Most of the loot is held in ether, an asset that no issuer can block.
Tether has won big again with USDT. The issuer of the market's first stablecoin reports a net operating profit of 1.3 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2026. Its excess reserves now reach 5.2 billion. U.S. Treasury bonds remain at the heart of its revenues.
Stablecoins are at the heart of a debate on digital currency. Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, contrasts their model with tokenized bank deposits. According to him, these two forms of money do not rely on the same guarantees. He believes that reserves in U.S. Treasury bonds offer more solid coverage. This position responds to criticism from the Bank for International Settlements, which advocates tokenized deposits. The debate concerns the reserves and the future of finance.
The Tron network has just passed a new milestone with more than 400 million registered accounts. This growth comes less than three years after crossing 200 million accounts and confirms its rise. Since its launch in June 2018, the network has gradually established itself in stablecoin transfers. Its cumulative volume approaches 30 trillion dollars, while USDT is the main driver of this usage.
European pressure on stablecoins is changing access to digital assets. Since the end of the European transition period, several platforms have removed USDT from their offerings. However, available data do not show a net decline in global demand. Activity is growing in some emerging markets, where people use stablecoins for payments, transfers, and financial services. This development places MiCA at a central challenge: regulating European access without altering global usages of the digital dollar.

USDT lost nearly 4 billion dollars in market capitalization over 60 days. On paper, this is bad for Bitcoin: fewer stablecoins means less liquidity available to buy. Yet, CryptoQuant also sees a possible seller exhaustion signal. The market lacks fuel, but it might soon lack sellers.
Russia takes a step in its approach to crypto. The central bank has just proposed a framework allowing individuals to access three cryptocurrencies on public markets. The project targets Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT, with an annual limit for non-qualified investors. This development marks a regulated crypto market opening, while the authorities want to limit exposure to price fluctuations. The system includes conditions for intermediaries and investors before any operation.
The euro collapses while the dollar sweeps the board. In barely two years, stablecoins have gone from 15% to 84% of crypto card spending, while the EURe languishes at 2%. Between rapid growth, opaque figures and an all-powerful dollar, this shift tells much more than a simple stablecoin war.
